Harry Joseph Flynn (born May 2, 1933 in Schenectady , New York State , † September 22, 2019 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis .

Life

Harry J. Flynn entered the Mount Saint Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland after completing his Masters in English from Siena College , Loudonville, NY. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Albany on May 28, 1960 . After serving in pastoral work, he was Dean, Vice-Rector and Rector of the Mount Saint Mary Seminary from 1965 to 1979.

On April 19, 1986 he was appointed coadjutor bishop in the diocese of Lafayette by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained episcopal on June 24, 1986 by the Bishop of Albany, Howard James Hubbard ; Co- consecrators were Philip Hannan , Archbishop of New Orleans , and Gerard Louis Frey , Bishop of Lafayette.

In 1987 he was accepted into the Papal Order of Knights by Maximilien de Fürstenberg , Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . On May 13, 1989, he succeeded Bishop Frey, who resigned on the same day, and became Bishop of Lafayette.

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor archbishop in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis on February 22, 1994 ; the inauguration took place on April 24 of the same year. With the resignation of John Robert Roach on September 8, 1995, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis . On May 2, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

Flynn was known for his work against racism and the persecution of immigrants. As chairman, he led the ad hoc committee against sexual abuse of the US bishops.
