Niederwenigern is a village and a district of Hattingen , North Rhine-Westphalia . The former municipality has 6042 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2014). The place lies in the natural spatial unity of the Ruhr layer rib land .

history

Niederwenigern (historically: Niederwengern ) was incorporated into the municipality of Winz on April 1, 1926 as part of a municipal reform. With this, the place came to Hattingen on January 1, 1970. Until then, the community had the postcode 4321 Niederwenigern, then 4320 Hattingen 16, now 45529 Hattingen.

Since January 2009 the former Niederwenigern branch of the Hattingen public library has been continued as a public library. There is also a primary school, which was created in 2015 by merging the Nikolaus-Groß-Schule and the community primary school.

Attractions

The sights of the predominantly Catholic village include the St. Mauritius Cathedral from 1868 and the Nikolaus Groß Museum next to the rectory, which is dedicated to Nikolaus Groß , who was born in Niederwenigern, the miner, worker leader and resistance fighter against National Socialism 2001 was beatified , as well as the Evangelical Church in Justinenweg.

economy

From 1951 to 1962 Niederwenigern was the location of a tunnel operation of the Neuglück colliery (150 employees); Today the sports field is located on its area.

The most important local employers include the St. Elisabeth Hospital and the retail trade.

Sports

There are two larger sports clubs on site. The VfL Niederwenigern from 1963 offers the sports handball, tennis, table tennis, swimming, gymnastics and hiking, the Sportfreunde Niederwenigern the sports soccer, volleyball, aerobics and badminton.

The Sportfreunde Niederwenigern belonged to the DJK until 1933 . After 1962 the club got its current sports field on Burgaltendorfer Straße. It is located on the site of the former Neuglück colliery, which, among other things, led to a break in daylight in 1967 in the middle of a home game. In 2009 the facility was completely renovated and converted to artificial turf .
