Fair trade capital

The competition for the title of the capital of fair trade is a nationwide competition for cities and municipalities in Germany. All municipalities that are involved in the areas of fair trade , fair procurement, Fairtrade Town and sustainable consumption can participate. The competition has been held every two years since 2003 by the Service Agency Communities in One World of Engagement Global as a contribution to the Fair Week and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development . Federal Development Minister Gerd Müller is the patron of the competition.

Award winners

The capital of fair trade in 2019 is Neumarkt idOPf . Also Münster , Bad Säckingen , Nuremberg and Leipzig were excellent. Special prizes for successful individual projects went to Dinslaken , Gotha , Hamburg , Lübeck and Westerstede . 100 municipalities participated in the 2019 competition with over 800 projects.

Previous title holders were Cologne 2017, Saarbrücken 2015, Rostock 2013, Bremen (2011), Marburg (2009), Düsseldorf (2007) and Dortmund (2003 and 2005).

So far, 243 different municipalities have applied and triggered 527 applications with over 5,000 projects.

Before the first award in 2003, the jury was constituted and agreed on evaluation aspects that can be described with the following terms:

  • unique selling point
  • transferable
  • cooperative
  • entire city involved
  • Concept for the measures available
  • Variety and variety of projects
  • Size of the commune
  • Corporate social responsibility

In 2011, the jury meeting decided not to allow any projects that are older than 5 years from the 2013 round and only those that are related to the topic of fair trade should be evaluated .

The projects can be divided into five areas of activity:

  • Structural measures (strategies, models, municipal decisions, etc.)
  • Information work and city marketing (events, campaigns , city ​​coffees , publications, etc.)
  • Municipal procurement (resolutions, information, etc.)
  • Marketing and sale of fair products ( world shop , retail trade, trade fairs, etc.)
  • Global learning , development-related education (training courses, school lessons, etc.)

The jury has been made up of representatives from the following institutions since 2003:

Annually / regularly changing:

  • Representation of the working group of one-world national networks in Germany
  • Representation of business (currently Association of Municipal Enterprises )
  • Representation of large Christian churches
  • Representation of the last award-winning city (2017: Cologne )

Prize money

The jury determines the ranking of the award winners and the amount of the prize money per award winner. This is also an expression of the differences in the placements. The prize money increased from 5,000 euros (2003) to 105,000 euros (2013) to 250,000 euros (2017). The number of prize winners rose from five to ten in 2013. Since 2017, 50,000 euros of the prize money (from 2013 it was 5,000 euros) have been awarded equally to five special prize winners for a single project. The winning municipality also receives a seal of approval that is used for marketing purposes.
