A heather queen is a representative of a certain place or region, elected as a product queen for a year, which is mostly located in a heathland . The freestyle is usually celebrated as part of a city festival, such as a heather blossom festival . The voting process differs from place to place.

Venues

The choice of a heather queen is particularly widespread in the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony . The best-known elections have been held in Schneverdingen since 1922 and in Amelinghausen since 1949 , where the male counterpart, the Heidebock, has also been elected since 1955. The Amelinghausen heather queen has been chosen as part of the heather blossom festival since 1950. Probably the most prominent former heather queen is Jenny Elvers from Amelinghausen . Other places in the Lüneburg Heath with a heather queen include Gifhorn , Meißendorf , Undeloh , Holm-Seppensen , Sprakensehl , Wittorf , Baven and Nemitz ( Nemitzer Heide ).

But there are also occasional elections for heather queens outside the Lüneburg Heath. The municipality of Colbitz in the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide in Saxony-Anhalt and the municipality of Steinhagen in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Feuchtwiese Vennheide nature reserve, for example, annually elect a queen. In the Brandenburg town of Zühlsdorf , men and women can also be elected to be the heather king at the annual heather festival.

There are also a few international elections. There has been a Queen of Heather in the Scottish town of Forth since 1932 . During the Highland Games in Otago , New Zealand , one item on the program is also the election of a heather queen. In Ede , the Netherlands, two heather queens are elected annually as part of the Heideweek .
