The Catholic Heilig-Geist-Kirche is a church in Nümbrecht , Oberbergischer Kreis , Germany. It is a modern tent-shaped church in the style of the 1970s. The church was built according to plans by the Cologne architect Hans Joachim Lohmeyer and was solemnly consecrated on November 13, 1976 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Joseph Cardinal Höffner .

history

The church in Nümbrecht owes its establishment primarily to Pastor Franz Stausberg, who found a good companion in the then Archbishop of Cologne.

"To the praise of God and for the salvation of the faithful was in 1948, at great sacrifice of Catholics and exemplary commitment of the then competent Kaplan built hamlet in Nümbrecht a house of God and the Holy Spirit consecrated." So begins deed for foundation consecration of today's Catholic Church Friedhofstrasse in 1975. The modest Heilig-Geist- Kapelle in Höhenstrasse was the center for the Catholic Christians in Nümbrecht for almost three decades. It was the first re-Catholic place of worship in Nümbrecht. Since 1563, when the imperial rule of Homburg converted to Protestantism , there was no longer a Catholic church or community in Nümbrecht. The Catholic minorities had to visit churches in the neighboring Bergisch villages of Waldbröl or Much .

The steadily growing number of believers after the Second World War , especially due to the influx from the east, prompted the parish of St. Michael Waldbröl to build a new church that could meet pastoral and liturgical needs. This included the construction of a larger church to celebrate the liturgy, a parsonage as a place for community events and a parsonage, as a residence for a pastor on site.

"With great joy and gratitude", the parish of St. Michael, under the spiritual direction of Pastor Franz Stausberg, invited to the consecration of the foundation stone of the new branch church of the Holy Spirit on June 15, 1975. The foundation stone was consecrated by Prelate Joseph Kowalski on behalf of Archbishop Höffner.

A year later the structure was built. On November 13, 1976, the church and the altar were consecrated by Cardinal Joseph Höffner and placed under the patronage of the Holy Spirit again. With the church, the parish hall with the residential building as the parish center was completed and handed over to the community. With confidence and foresight about the future influx of the population, Pastor Stausberg and the parishioners planned and built today's Catholic branch church of the Holy Spirit.

On Wednesday, April 18, 1984, the day before Maundy Thursday , the roof of the church burned down. The fire broke out over the chancel and quickly spread to the entire roof, as the extinguishing work, despite the rapid arrival of the fire brigade, was made more difficult by the Eternit slate and the wood paneling. In addition, the heavy crown of the roof threatened to fall from the top of the roof. According to investigations by the criminal police , soldering work on the gutters was probably the trigger for the fire, which caused damage of over 1 million Deutschmarks . Most of the damage was done by the soot from the charred wood and the water used for the fire. The ornate glass windows remained intact. An emergency church was quickly built in the parish hall and the Protestant church in Nümbrecht was made available for special celebrations . The reconstruction and renovation began quickly and on March 24, 1985, the Cologne auxiliary bishop Klaus Dick was able to rededicate the renovated church. A cross in the church, which was made from beams from the burned down roof, reminds of the fire.

Today the church in Nümbrecht is part of the parish of St. Michael in Waldbröl as well as the pastoral care area "An Bröl und Wiehl" in the district dean of Oberbergischer Kreis .

architecture

The tent shape of the church is intended to symbolize invitation and statement of faith at the same time: "God's tent among men" (according to Ps 27: 5) and source of strength for the church as "wandering people of God" ( Lumen Gentium ). The church has an octagonal plan. This is reminiscent of the early Christian baptisteries , the first baptismal places for Christians. The number eight stands for the eighth day of creation, on which Christ was resurrected, and generally for a new beginning.

The interior of the church is kept very simple. The walls are whitewashed and, in contrast to the bronze art objects, represent the simplicity of the whole building. Also striking are the glass block windows designed in various shades of blue to white by an unknown artist. Various symbols, which can be interpreted individually, have been introduced into the glass using glass melting technology. The blue of the windows bathes the church in a blue light that underlines the importance of the baptistery: the color blue stands for the water of baptism and the kingdom of God . The wooden paneled roof creates spatial warmth.

"Middle point", path companion and goal of life is Jesus Christ, who, hanging on the cross with outstretched arms, invites visitors to himself and the new possibilities of life as a Christian. The cross is also not a pure Passion or Resurrection cross, but a cross with three levels. At first only the human being can be seen as a cross, then the large nails that symbolize the Passion, and thirdly only the outline of the crucified one, who reaches into the community as the risen one. The church houses many works of art such as this large cross, which, like z. B. the chapel lattice was created by Cologne metal sculptor Wolfgang Göddertz . The bronze depiction of the Virgin Mary as the “mother of refuge and security” with Jesus in her lap, made in 1994 by Cologne-Braunfeld sculptor Hanne Wagenknecht, is also exceptional.

Bell inscription:

,,HOLY SPIRIT"
NÜMBRECHT 04/18/1984

The inscription commemorates the fire on April 18, 1984.

2 Mother of God 1849 Georg Claren, Sieglar 560 95 e 2 In the expertise of the bell expert of the archdiocese of 1981 it says: "It is not a particularly valuable bell made by the bell founder Claren". The bell had previously supported three other chimes, namely from churches in Gummersbach (1849 - 1899), Dieringhausen (1899 - 1938) and Osberghausen (1938 - 1981). It was not until 1981 that it came to the Holy Spirit Church as the first bell and “temporary solution”. It was damaged in the 1984 fire and classified as no longer “usable”. Until 2000 it was in the church as a reminder of the fire. Upon renewed assessment by the bell expert in 2000, it was classified as "fully usable" and has been supplementing the bell since then.
