Holy grave

The holy grave

In a wall niche in the north there is a holy grave with eight sandstone statues from 1501, which were painted in color at the end of the 19th century. The exact origin of the group of sculptures is not known. Presumably it stood in a St. Egidien church in the Eisenach region and came to southern Eichsfeld after the turmoil of the Peasants' War. Possibly it was also intended for the no longer completed pilgrimage church in the neighboring Katharinenberg . It was then set up in the Diedorf church. In 1728 a separate chapel was built for the burial and a pilgrimage developed. When the church was rebuilt, it was installed there.
