Heilung is a German-Danish-Norwegian Nordic ritual folk band that makes music based on original artifacts and traditional texts from the Iron Age and the Viking Age . They describe their music as "amplified history from early medieval northern Europe" (German for example: extended history from early medieval northern Europe).

history

Heilung was founded in 2014 by Kai Uwe Faust ( tattoo artist specializing in Old Norse tattoos ) and Christopher Juul von Euzen . Maria Franz later joined the band.

In 2015 the band released their debut album Ofnir themselves.

Heilung first appeared in 2017 at Castlefest and the Midgardsblot Metal Festival. The live performance at Castlefest was recorded and released on YouTube and as a live album entitled Lifa . Her performance at the Midgardsblot Festival was named one of the ten best live performances of 2017 by Metal Hammer .

In 2017 the band signed a contract with the Season of Mist label . On April 20, 2018, the two previously self-published albums Ofnir and Lifa were reissued by the record company. On June 28, 2019, the band's second studio album, called Futha , was released.

In December 2019 the band announced a collaboration with the developer studio Ninja Theory for the soundtrack for the video game "Senua's Saga: Hellblade II".

style

According to Kai Uwe Faust, the name of the band " Heilung " also says something about the style of the band. In this way, the music of healing is intended to make " sounds and sounds of bygone times" tangible again. In addition, meditation and trance states should be evoked in the listener , which should bring him into contact with his "inner healing self ". The recordings by the band Heilung are not limited to music, they also contain poetry.

The reference to the early epochs of mankind is also established through the fact that texts or historical poems that have been handed down on historical artefacts are used as song texts. The languages used are diverse: from German and English to Gothic and Latin to Iron Age Norwegian dialects of Ur- Norse .

The instruments used are mostly objects that might have been available to people in the Iron Age , such as drums , bones or spears . Maria Franz's female singing has an ethereal effect, while Uwe Faust's throat singing is reminiscent of the Tibetan or Mongolian way of singing. Christopher Juul uses a nagging whisper to sing.

As a further stylistic device, the band members wear elaborately designed costumes on stage . They are partly based on the "spiritual traditions of the Eurasian circumpolar peoples" or reproduce historically correct images of Viking Age clothing.

There is no connection with the band to modern political or religious concepts, as these refer to a time long before these concepts existed.
