Heini Bornstein
Heini Bornstein (born September 17, 1920 in Basel ; died April 15, 2016 in Lehavot HaBashan , Northern District , Israel ) was a Swiss textile merchant, socialist Zionist and autobiographer .
Life
Heini Bornstein was born as the son of Malka Ber (1886–1952 [?]) And Bernhard Dov Bornstein (1889–1985) in Basel and had a sister. The family emigrated to Switzerland from Łódź , Poland , in 1913 . Naturalization took place in 1931 .
From 1941 to 1943 Bornstein attended the agricultural schools in Liestal and Münsingen . In 1933 he became a member of the socialist-Zionist youth organization Hashomer Hatzair with the aim of emigrating to Palestine . In 1939 he took part in the 21st Zionist Congress in Geneva . He attended a recruiting school and did active service in the Swiss Army . In 1943 he was appointed delegate of the Hashomer Hazair in Geneva. He took part in refugee rescue operations across the Swiss border near Basel and in the Jura , helping hundreds of French, Belgians and Dutch people with Jewish ancestors to survive. Bornstein maintained relationships with the French fighting organization Organization Juive de Combat (OJC) and helped set up and support the Jewish refugee camps in Sierre, Bex, Versoix and Trevano. In April 1945 he took part in the refugee conference on questions of return and onward migration in Montreux . In 1947 he married Chasia Bielicka from Poland . In 1947 the couple entered Palestine illegally, where they resided in Kibbutz Lehavot HaBashan. There Bornstein took on various functions in the kibbutz movement, the World Zionist Organization , the Jewish Agency for Israel and in the Israeli socialist Mapam party.
Chasia and Heini Bornstein had three children together in Israel: Yehudit (* 1949), Racheli (* 1951) and Dorit (* 1960).
