Heinrich August Freiherr von Gersdorff (born January 18, 1793 in Herrnhut , † September 30, 1870 in Weimar ) was a German lawyer and homeopath.

Life

Heinrich August von Gersdorff came from the Lusatian noble family von Gersdorff . He was the son of the Majorate Lord on Alt-Seidenberg in Upper Lusatia (today part of Sulików ) Ernst von Gersdorff and his second wife Charlotte, born. Countess Arrow from the House of Groß Wilkau. As members of the Brethren , they spent the winters in Herrnhut. The later Minister of State of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach Ernst Christian August von Gersdorff was his older half-brother from his father's first marriage. He went through the education system of the Brethren: At the age of seven he went to the boarding school in Niesky, then went to the pedagogy in Barby and was most recently at the noble pension institute in Großhennersdorf near Herrnhut.

In 1810 he began studying law at the University of Leipzig . Due to the course of the coalition wars , he joined an Austrian Chevauxleger regiment as a cadet . In the summer of 1813 he left this service and reported as a volunteer at General von Blücher when he had set up his headquarters in Herrnhut in the autumn of 1813. He was transferred to the Brandenburg Hussar Regiment (Zieten Hussars); his first deployment was in the battle of Wartenburg on October 3, 1813. Shortly afterwards, he was hewn from a horse in the Battle of Leipzig and his head and left arm were so badly wounded that he had to quit military service.

He went to the University of Jena , continued his studies and was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD. As an assessor at the government college in Jena, he entered the state service of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. When the jury was established, he was appointed president. From 1850 he was a judge of appeal at the joint appeal court in Eisenach for Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach, Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen . In 1867 he was able to celebrate his 50th anniversary in the Weimar civil service.

Heinrich August von Gersdorff was an early supporter and friend of Samuel Hahnemann . In Eisenach he treated many needy patients with success and made various experiments on himself with medicines.

He married Auguste, born in Herrnhut in 1818. von Tschirschky and Bögendorff . The son of the couple, Ernst Bruno von Gersdorff, emigrated to the USA in 1849 and became a successful doctor in Boston . He was the great grandfather of the journalist Ben Bradlee . The daughter Alma (1837-1909) married the Mecklenburg landowner and district administrator Georg von Flotow (1837-1901) on Kogel and Stuer .
