biography

Heinrich Auspitz was born as the son of the surgeon Moritz Auspitz (1803-1880) in Moravia , his younger brother was Leopold Auspitz (* December 5, 1838, † February 23, 1907), kk major general and writer . In 1840 his father took up a job at the Jewish hospital in Vienna to enable his sons to get a better education. He was the patron saint of surgery in Nikolsburg , now he was doing his Matura in addition to his work in order to obtain a doctorate and, after 1848, to take over the position of primary surgeon.

Heinrich graduated from high school, studied medicine in Vienna and received his doctorate in 1858 . Among his teachers was the dermatologist Ferdinand von Hebra , with whose son Hans he was close friends. In 1863 Auspitz received his habilitation for dermatology and syphilidology at the University of Vienna . From 1864 Auspitz worked at the Histological Institute of Carl Wedl .

On July 16, 1865 he married the most gifted student of Smetana , Auguste Kolářova (born March 19, 1844 in Prague ; † December 23, 1878), who became known as a pianist and composer under the name of Auguste Auspitz-Kolár.

Together with Filip Josef Pick (1834–1910), professor in Prague, he founded the first German-language journal for dermatology, the Archive for Dermatology and Syphilis, in 1869 . His study "On the dependence of epidermis and corium " was published in 1870, but he did not get a job at a clinic. Then he and his colleagues opened the General Polyclinic Vienna with various departments, of which he became director in 1872. As an associate professor from 1875, the following year he introduced curettage and chemosurgery in the treatment of skin diseases. In 1882 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Academic Academy . In 1884 he became a full professor and director of the second department for syphilis in the Vienna General Hospital . When he died of a heart condition in 1886, he had also survived his son Hans (* around 1875; † January 1879). He was buried on May 25, 1886 in the Vienna Central Cemetery in the family grave site 16 / E / 3/12.

Auspitz phenomenon

An important diagnostic phenomenon of psoriasis vulgaris . After scraping off the parakeratotic horny layer and opening the capillaries located just below the thinned epidermis, punctiform bleeding can be observed, known as the "sign of bloody dew" or the "Auspitz phenomenon" . This phenomenon was already described in 1867 by Ferdinand von Hebra in his "Atlas of Skin Diseases" . Since Auspitz made this diagnostic feature known as such, it is now associated with his name.
