Heinrich Camerarius , also Henricus Camerarius (* 1547 in Braunschweig as Heinrich Kemmer ; † February 11, 1601 near Gieseritz ), was a German legal scholar.

Life

Heinrich Camerarius was the son of the Brunswick merchant Hans Kemmer († 1549) and his wife Kunigunde, b. Pelt. He was taught by Joachim Mörlin in Braunschweig and began studying at the University of Wittenberg in 1566 . After just two months, he moved to the University of Rostock . There he was in 1570 for Master's and 1574 for licentiate rights doctorate . He was appointed syndic of the Hanseatic City of Rostock and in 1578 full professor of law at the university. His doctorate in law took place on August 13, 1579. He gave lectures on Luebian law and its modifications in Rostock. In his writings on Roman law, Camerarius represented the humanistic views of Jacques Cujas . In 1583, 1589 and 1595 he was rector of the university.

The city of Rostock sent him to Sweden (1587), to the Hanseatic days in Lübeck and the state parliaments of the Duchy of Mecklenburg . He was the councilor of Duke Ulrich von Mecklenburg , Duke Bogislaw XIII. and Philip II of Pomerania , the princes of Lüneburg and the duke Franz von Sachsen-Lauenburg . He refused an appointment to the syndic of Braunschweig in 1588, but was involved in a comparison between the city and Duke Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in October 1600 .

Heinrich Camerarius died in 1601 while on a journey on his return from Salzwedel to Rostock near Gieseritz and was buried in Rostock. He was married to Margarete Dobbin (1554-1626) since 1575. Her daughter Margarethe married the legal scholar Martin Chemnitz (1561–1627).
