Heinrich Demelius

Heinrich Demelius (born November 2, 1893 in Mödling ; † February 6, 1987 in Vienna ) was an Austrian legal historian and professor at the University of Vienna .

Life

Heinrich Demelius was born on November 2, 1893 in Mödling. He was the child of a family of lawyers: his father Ernst Demelius (1859–1904) was professor of civil law in Innsbruck , his grandfather Gustav Demelius (1831–1891) professor of Roman law at the University of Vienna. The other grandfather Heinrich von Bach (1835–1915), who became his guardian after his father's death in 1904 , worked as court counsel in Vienna, his brother Alexander von Bach (1813–1893) was Austrian Minister of Justice in 1848, later the curator of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna . Another uncle of Heinrich Demelius was the politician Eduard von Bach (1815-1884). His great-grandfathers were Gottfried Demelius district judge in Weimar , Michael Bach and Wenzel Kolisko lawyers in Vienna.

Heinrich Demelius graduated from the Hietzinger Gymnasium Fichtnergasse in 1911 . He completed his studies at the law and political science faculty of the University of Vienna in 1916 with a doctorate .

After two years of military service in the Austro-Hungarian Army of World War I , he completed his judicial year in 1919 . The habilitation took place in 1920 under Moritz Wellspacher (1871-1923) for civil law . In 1930 Heinrich Demelius became a professor at the University of Vienna. From 1935 he taught at the Vienna University for World Trade . While teaching at the University of Vienna, he worked as a judge at the Regional Court for Civil Law Matters , and later at the Vienna Commercial Court .

In 1939 Heinrich Demelius took over as the successor to Josef Hupka (1875–1944) as professor for commercial and bill of exchange law and held lectures until the academic year 1945/46. After that, his name is missing in the course catalog. Due to his membership in the NSDAP , he belonged to the group of persons required to register under the Prohibition Act . In the academic year 1947/48 he returned to the faculty and was professor again at the end of 1948. The Faculty of Law in Vienna elected him dean in 1952/53, and again in the 1961/62 academic year. As part of his work at the faculty, he was one of the main sponsors of young scientists, including professors such as Walter Selb and Werner Ogris . In 1962 he became a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Heinrich Demelius retired in 1965. In addition to his teaching activities, one focus of his work was the history of the city of Vienna and its surroundings. From 1950 he was a member of the Association for the History of the City of Vienna and became one of its honorary members.

Heinrich Demelius died on February 6, 1987 in Vienna.
