Heinrich Ernst von Hoff

Heinrich Ernst von Hoff (born September 29, 1782 in Gotha ; † March 11, 1851 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German officer and civil servant.

Life

Heinrich Ernst von Hoff was the son of Johann Christian von Hoff (1722–1801), a secret assistant councilor and member of the ducal ministry and his wife Johanna Friederike Sophie (1751–1806), a daughter of Heinrich Ludwig von Avemann (1696–1761), Secret senior consistorial councilor in Gotha, born. In February 1798 he joined the royal Prussian infantry regiment von Götze in Berlin as a Junker and was promoted to officer in 1799. In 1803 he was assigned to Regiment No. 59 Waiting life to Erfurt and later transferred to the grenadiers of this regiment in Mühlhausen .

In 1806 he was involved in the battle of Auerstedt . The Prussian troop corps was completely blown up and he got right in the middle of the French lines. Only through cunning and courage could he avoid being captured, but then needed weeks before he could join a Prussian troop detachment near Boizenburg on the Elbe . He was in the battles with the French in and around Lübeck involved; his left arm was crushed and he was taken prisoner by the French. After the conclusion of the Tilsit Peace he was bid farewell as captain and was able to leave Lübeck in April 1807.

In May 1808 he managed to get a job as a captain in the Württemberg service. On July 15, 1809, after the outbreak of the Tyrolean uprising, he was involved in the battle near Eglof and was seriously wounded again, which led to his quitting his service and asking for a position in community service.

In 1809 he was appointed postmaster in Biberach and in April 1812 he was promoted to chief postmaster in Tübingen . In 1822 he was appointed to the General Postal Directorate in Frankfurt am Main and in 1823 to the General Postal Directorate Council.

Both in his military career and in his civilian career, he produced topographical and postal maps, some of which were published in print.
