Heinrich Walpot (also Heinrich Waldbott ; † before 1208) was the first Grand Master of the Teutonic Order in the period from 1198 to 1207 at the latest.

Life

Since there were numerous families with the name Walpot, it was not possible for research to determine which gender he came from, at least until 1969. The little information that is known about him often comes from the theories of historians. Statements must therefore always be checked for their original sources. One of the older theories claims that he belongs to the family of the Walpot von Bassenheim , a Rhineland ministerial family . (A Siegfried Walpot von Bassenheim was later Komtur and supreme Spittler in the state; the town of Passenheim in Masuria, now Pasym in Polish , was named after him in 1386. ) According to other sources, Heinrich Walpot was of bourgeois origin and came from a merchant family from Mainz .

The order of knights emerged from a hospital fraternity , which was headed by a certain Heinrich as "Preceptor" as early as 1196 , behind whom one can assume the same Heinrich Walpot. In 1198 he was elected the first Grand Master of the newly created order of knights. At the mediation of Pope Innocent III. Heinrich received in 1199 from Gilbert Hérail , Grand Master of the Templars, a copy of the monastery rules of the Templar Order , which he adopted for the Teutonic Order.

Heinrich died on November 5th (documented) sometime before the year 1208 in the Holy Land , when his successor was already in office (the exact year is unknown), and was buried there in Acre .
