Heinz Roemheld

Heinz Eric Roemheld (born May 1, 1901 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , † February 11, 1985 in Huntington Beach , California ) was an American film composer and arranger with German roots.

biography

Roemheld grew up as one of four children of the pharmacist Heinrich Roemheld and his wife Fanny Rauterberg Roemheld in Milwaukee, which was dominated by Germans. He came from a musical family. His brother Edgar worked as a conductor, his sister Irmgard as a music teacher and radio presenter, and he learned to play the piano from the age of four .

At the age of 19, he completed his musical education at the Wisconsin College of Music and played in theaters in order to finance a study visit to Germany. In 1920 he went to Germany and studied at various conservatories in Berlin , a. a. with Rudolf Maria Breithaupt , Hugo Kaun , Ferruccio Busoni and Egon Petri . He made his first appearance as a pianist in 1922 with the Berliner Philharmoniker . From 1922 to 1926 he worked as a composer and musical director for various film companies such as the music and film publisher RCA-Victor. During this time Franz Waxman , a later Oscar-winning composer, worked for Roemheld. It was there that he met Bernhard Kaun , whose father he had trained with.

In 1927 Roemheld went back to the United States and was employed by Universal as a composer and arranger. One of his first works was the setting of the American version of The White Hell from Piz Palü and the musical collaboration on In the West Nothing New . Together with Bernhard Kaun he worked for Universal-Pictures in the 1930s, u. a. on the new dubbing of The Midnight Sun , as well as on British Agent und Mord im Nachtclub .

In 1934 he received his first commission as a film composer for the horror classic The Black Cat . In the following years he then worked increasingly for Warner Bros. For the film Most Beautiful in the City , he received a 1942 Oscar nomination in the category of best film music . A year later he was able to win the trophy for Yankee Doodle Dandy . After the film he was hired by Columbia Pictures , where he set several westerns with Randolph Scott in the lead role.

After the film My Best Friend , shot in 1962 , he ended his 30-year career in which he had worked on over 250 films.
