Heinz Gärtner (born March 7, 1951 in Pisweg , municipality of Gurk) is an Austrian political scientist and journalist.

academic education

After attending the Bundes- und Bundesrealgymnasium Klagenfurt , he passed the final exams in 1970 . This was followed by a nine-month military service in Klagenfurt. From 1971 he studied political science , journalism and communication theory at the University of Salzburg . In November 1977 he received his doctorate with distinction, in March 1990 he received his habilitation as a university lecturer at the University of Innsbruck and on May 10, 2001 he was awarded the title of university professor .

Professional position

Heinz Gärtner has been Scientific Director of the Austrian Institute for International Politics (OIIP) since January 2013 .

From 1979 to December 2012 he was a research assistant at the oiip. Since 1983 he has been teaching at the Universities of Vienna , Innsbruck and the University of Salzburg . From 1998 to 2001 he was visiting professor at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Vienna. He is editor of the book series Internationale Sicherheit at Peter Lang Verlag .
