Heinz Mayer (lawyer)

Heinz Mayer (born September 22, 1946 in Mürzzuschlag ) is an Austrian constitutional and administrative lawyer, emeritus professor at the University of Vienna and former dean of the law faculty of this university . He is known to the public as a reviewer and the author of several standard legal works.

Education and professional life

After graduating from the Bundesrealgymnasium in Mödling in 1965 , he studied law at the University of Vienna and was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. In 1970 he became a university assistant at the Institute for Administrative and Constitutional Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business ; in addition, he studied political science , where he was awarded a Dr. rer. pole. received his doctorate. In the same year he received the Theodor-Körner-Preis and started his work in the practical administrative service with the district authority Mödling. In 1975 he completed his habilitation in public law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business .

Mayer worked full-time as a lecturer at the Federal Administration Academy from 1977 to 1979 . In 1979 he became an associate professor and in 1983 a full professor at the law faculty of the University of Vienna. From 1991 to 2003 Mayer was scientific director and from 2004 a member of the board of trustees of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Legislative Practice and Legal Application; since 1996 he has been a member of the board of directors of the Hans Kelsen Institute . In the Austria Convention (June 2003-January 2005) Mayer was chairman of the National Objectives Committee. In 2004 he was proposed by the Greens as an independent candidate to succeed Franz Fiedler as President of the Court of Auditors ; Josef Moser ( FPÖ ) was ultimately elected . From 2005 to 2006 he was President, since 2006 he has been Vice President of the Advisory Board of Transparency International Austria . Since 2007 he has been a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts . From 2006 to 2014 Mayer was Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna. At the end of September 2014 he retired. Mayer has been with the commercial law firm Lansky , Ganzger + Partner Of counsel since October 2014 .

Heinz Mayer was in discussion in 2006 as a possible Minister of Justice for a possible SPÖ minority government.
