Hélène Joy (born October 21, 1978 in Perth ) is a Canadian - Australian actress .

Life

Joy was born in Perth and raised in Australia. She began acting at Kewdale Senior High School and then toured Europe with a youth theater company. She majored in theater for a year at Curtin University before she was accepted into the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts in Perth, where she graduated with a degree in performance. She won the Academy’s Leslie Anderson Award for Best Actress. She starred in theater and small film and television productions in Australia for a number of years before moving to Vancouver , Canada in 2000 .

Joy began her theater career in Australia in the 1990s. She played regularly in Sydney ensembles for the Bell Shakespeare Company and the Melbourne Theater Company . In Canada, she made her theatrical debut in 2012 with a role in Andrew Bovell's Speaking in Tongues at The Company Theater in Toronto.

Film acting

In Australia, Joy had minor roles in television series such as Snowy River: The McGregor Saga (1996), Water Rats - Die Hafencops (1996-97), Big Sky (1997) and Stingers (1999). After moving to Canada, roles in productions such as First Wave - Die Prophezeiung (2000), Outer Limits - The Unknown Dimension (2001), The Chris Isaak Show (2002) and The Twilight Zone (2002) followed. In 2003 she got the lead role of Judy Surgick in the short-lived television sitcom An American in Canada on CBC . For this role, she and her team were nominated for the 2003 Gemini Award in the category “Best Ensemble Performance in a Comedy Series”.

She starred in several supporting roles in Toronto , such as after moving to Toronto, she played a supporting role in The Murdoch Mysteries: Under the Dragon's Tail (2004), before finally moving to Toronto. This is followed by roles in Canadian television series such as This Is Wonderland (2005-06) and ReGenesis (2006). Between 2007 and 2010 she played in Durham County - In the intoxication of violence and in 2008 as a doc in the primetime soap opera MVP: The Secret Lives of Hockey Wives .

At Christmas 2007 she starred in the fantasy musical film The Secret of the Nutcracker with Brian Cox for the broadcaster CBC. In 2008 she had a role in An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving with Jacqueline Bisset on Hallmark . She has guest roles in Heartland - Paradise for Horses , Rookie Blue (2011), Republic of Doyle - Use for Two (2012) and The LA Complex (2012), among others .

Although she played a different character in Under the Dragon's Tail , the third television movie about William Murdoch and his unique style of detective work, the book's author, Maureen Jennings , was so impressed with Joy's acting skills that she convinced the show's producers, Joy for the role of “Dr. Julia Ogden ”. As a result, Joy has played this role in Murdoch Mysteries since 2008.

Voice acting

In some productions she had roles as voice actress. She voiced "Gabi" and "Polly" in the Australian-Canadian cartoon series Yolky in The Eggs (2004), Faireez (2005), The Secret World of Og (2006), Pearlie (2009), and Detentionaire (2012) .

In 2006, Joy was nominated for a Gemini Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama or Miniseries in Murdoch Mysteries: Under the Dragon's Tail . She was also nominated for "Best Guest Role in a Drama Production" in ReGenesis . In 2011 and 2012 she was nominated for an award for “Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series” for her role in Murdoch Mysteries at the Festival de Télévision de Monte-Carlo . In 2014, 2017 and 2018 she was nominated for the Canadian Screen Award for "Best Leading Role" in the series Murdoch Mysteries .

She won the Leslie Anderson Award for Best Actress at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts . In 2005 she won a Leo Award for "Best Actress Leading Role in a Feature-Length Drama" for her role in Desolation Sound . For her role in Durham County , she won the Gemini Award for "Best Acting in a Continuing Dramatic Leading Role".
