Heartland is a Canadian television series based on the book series of the same name by Lauren Brooke . The series has been broadcast on the Canadian broadcaster CBC Television since October 14, 2007 , and now has thirteen seasons with over 200 episodes. This makes it the longest-running one-hour drama series in Canada to date. The 13th season aired in Canada from September 22, 2019 to November 24, 2019.

action

The focus of the action is the "Heartland" horse ranch, where neglected or abused horses are treated using alternative healing methods. After the tragic death of Marion Fleming, her daughters Amy and Lou, together with their grandfather Jack Bartlett, endeavor to avert the threatened financial ruin of the farm and to preserve their mother's legacy.

The first season begins with the car accident when the mother of 15-year-old Amy Fleming had a fatal accident during the rescue operation for the neglected stallion Spartan . When Amy wakes up from a coma due to the serious injuries in the hospital, she learns that her mother was killed in the accident. Then a world collapses for them.

From now on, Amy bears all responsibility for the horses alone. She is supported in this difficult task by her grandfather Jack Bartlett and the stable boy Ty Borden, who has just come to the ranch. Amy's older sister Lou also travels from New York to settle the finances and support her family. Over time, the 15-year-old has treated many traumatized horses, including the mare Promise , who inexplicably cannot be saddled, and the former racehorse Gallant Prince , who does not allow anyone near him after a stable fire.

To save the ranch from bankruptcy, Lou organizes an "open house" and shoots a commercial - with success. Your efforts are paying off. When a former employee of her father set the barn on fire in revenge, the Fleming family realized that the people around them would not let them down. Many friends come to help rebuild the burned down stable. The fire is just one of the many roadblocks that pose great challenges for Amy and her family over time.

main characters

Amy Fleming-Borden
Amy was only 15 years old when she and her mother had a car accident. Her mother had a fatal accident, Amy was injured and fell into a coma. When she wakes up from the coma, she learns of her mother's fate. Amy tries to get over death and wants to heal the horse that Amy and her mother saved because "Spartan" is mentally ill from the car accident. Amy succeeds in helping the horse because she inherited the gift of understanding and healing horses from her mother. Amy decides to continue running the Heartland horse ranch, which helps severely traumatized horses, and from then on tries to reconcile work on the ranch and school. She is supported by her grandfather Jack, her sister Lou and Ty, who works on the ranch on probation. A relationship develops between Ty and Amy. After overcoming a few obstacles, the two finally marry at the end of season 8 and fly together on their honeymoon in France (a wedding present from the family). At the end of season 9, Amy tells Ty that she is pregnant, and in season 10 she will have a baby.
Samantha Louise "Lou" Fleming-Morris
Lou is Amy's older sister. She grew up on Heartland and was in New York for a number of years. After her mother dies, she temporarily returns to Heartland to take care of the finances and avert financial ruin from the ranch. However, when she is manipulated by her boyfriend from New York to get her back into the business world, she makes a permanent decision. Lou and Amy grow closer over time and manage to save the ranch together. She later founds a vacation ranch on Heartland with her father and met Peter Morris, the owner of an oil company. Peter and Lou get married and move to Dubai for a while. But there Lou feels like in a golden cage and she returns to Heartland. When Peter's company goes bankrupt, he too comes to Heartland and the two have a child, little Catherine Marion Minnie Fleming Morris. The three of them want to start their own family, but the house they bought burns down. Later Lou and Peter adopt Georgina "Georgie" together. Lou and Peter go through a marital crisis and decide to split up on friendly terms.
Jackson "Jack" Bartlett
Jack, once a successful rodeo rider, is the grandfather of Amy and Lou. After the death of his daughter Marion, he tries to take over all the work that comes up despite his osteoarthritis at the Heartland Ranch and to provide his granddaughters with advice and assistance. But he cannot approve of the sudden return of his son-in-law Tim, as he failed as a father in his eyes. On the other hand, he offers young Ty a chance to fulfill his probation as a stable boy on the ranch. The relationship between him and Ty grows stronger and Jack helps him out of some difficult situations. Jack becomes engaged to Lisa Stillman, but after some misunderstandings, they take a break from their relationship. However, the two get closer again and finally decide - secretly - to marry, only Tim found out about the couple's plans.
Ty Borden
Ty is considered a juvenile offender because he wanted to protect his mother from further domestic violence by his stepfather. He is allowed to work on the Heartland Ranch, where he is gradually learning to work with horses, subject to probation. Jack helps him start a fresh start, and he gradually opens up to Amy. He opens up to Amy's methods and always helps her. He bought his horse "Harley" at an auction. After initial difficulties, Ty and Amy finally get together and he gives her a friendship ring. Ty begins studying veterinary medicine and works with Scott, the veterinarian, at his veterinary clinic to gain hands-on experience. Ty and Amy later officially become engaged and get married. Later, at the end of Season 9, Amy tells Ty that she is pregnant.
Mallory Wells
Mallory, who is only twelve years old, lives near the ranch with her parents, but visits very often, especially to see her favorite horse, Copper. Her parents are country musicians, but she does not want to accompany Mallory during her tour and asks Jack to be allowed to stay on Heartland during the time. In between, she is sent to a boarding school, from which she escapes to live on Heartland again. She is the “dear little chatterbox” of the ranch, but often does not feel that she belongs to anyone and is not noticed. Increasingly, their lives are shaped by high school: boys, fake girlfriends, etc.
Tim Fleming
Tim Flemming once suffered a serious accident at the rodeo with his horse Pegasus. He then became addicted to alcohol and pills. Because of this, his wife Marion divorced him and Jack did not allow any contact with his daughters Amy and Lou. After the accident of his ex-wife, however, he begins to fight again for the two. He rebuilds a good relationship with his whole family.
He is dedicated to horse racing and maintains several racehorses. He meets Jocky Janice and starts a relationship with her. However, when he asks Janice to become his wife for the wrong reasons, she abandons him. Tim learns from a former lover that she and he have an 11-year-old son (Shane) together. After he has already missed a large part of his daughters' lives, he now fights for his son and begins a relationship with Shane's mother again.
Scott Cardinal
Scott is the resident vet and has long been a close family friend. He, too, was once a juvenile offender and worked on the ranch. He knows and values the alternative healing methods used on Heartland. The reunion with Lou revives his earlier feelings for her. One increasingly learns something about his childhood, for example his grandfather was a tribal elder, but towards the end the two did not have a particularly good relationship.
Ashley Stanton
Ashley is a classmate of Amy's and her biggest competitor in show jumping. She never misses an opportunity to pull up on the Heartland Ranch. However, strict methods prevail on her mother's large stud and despite all the efforts, she can never please her ambitious mother. However, over time, Amy and Ashley become friends and support one another. When her mother's pressure gets too strong, she moves into the trailer with Caleb and the two marry with some difficulty. When the relationship with her mother improves, she moves to a campus in British Columbia to catch up on her high school degree and then to complete a degree. This is the end of her marriage to Caleb.
Caleb O'Dell
Among other things, Caleb works on the ranch to earn money alongside the rodeo. He was in a relationship with Amy for a while, but she had the same feelings for Ty as he did for Ashley. He marries Ashley and lived with her in his trailer. After some difficulties he wanted to sell his horse "Shorty" and stop riding the rodeo. Tim stopped him. He and Ashley have money problems, but Caleb is too proud to take the money from Ashley's mother. In the end, Ashley's mother buys the property on which the trailer stands and the two of them are allowed to stay there. After his marriage breaks down, he works on Heartland again and befriends Lou. However, she soon has to explain to him that she has no feelings for him.
Lisa Stillman
Lisa is one of the richest women in Hudson, she owns the thoroughbred "Fairfield". She is said to be a thoroughbred herself in a way because she can be quick-tempered and has a tendency to interfere. After leaving her nephew on Heartland for a while, a relationship develops between her and Jack. They even get engaged, but decide to let Lou go ahead with their wedding. Jack and Lisa split up for a while and Lisa moves to France. But after a while she comes back to sell her "Fairfield" stable. She and Jack want to take away their horse "Cinders", but they run out of gas. They have to spend the night in the forest and approach again. In the end they come together again. She becomes the godmother of Lou's daughter Cathie. In season 7, Jack and Lisa finally get married; However, even here it is not without complications, as they keep it from the others for months. Only Tim knew because he was at the wedding (they didn't want to, but he got wind of it and just showed up). Then one evening Tim blabbers and a family crisis seems to be imminent.
Soraya Duval
Soraya is Amy's best friend and works in her mother's diner. She is a good soul and lends a hand everywhere, especially since she gets on with almost everyone. However, she often has bad luck in love. First Ben brushes her off, then Chase cheats on her with her best friend. But of course Soraya doesn't let that get her down. So she steps in for Lou as part of the managing director of the holiday ranch while she lives with Peter in Dubai . Soraya begins studying at the University of Calgary , but later moves to live with her boyfriend Dillon in London .
Georgina "Georgie"
Georgie's parents died in a car accident when she was three. She has since been passed from one foster family to the next. Her older brother Jeffrey cannot take responsibility for her due to his own life situation.
She comes to Heartland on the run from another foster family. When Clint comes to pick her up, Amy and Jack feel sorry for her and temporarily take Georgie in. She grows on everyone's heart and begins to feel comfortable on Heartland. She builds a close bond with a gray horse that can only be ridden by her. Amy trains her and Phoenix to show jumping, and Georgie finds a dog to look after.
Jack applies to be an adoptive father for Georgie, but is turned down because of his old age. At the last minute, Lou and Peter adopt Georgie and she stays on Heartland. She slowly develops a good relationship with Lou. Shortly after her birthday her brother comes, who now has a job and money to "save" Georgie. Out of a guilty conscience, Georgie is about to come with her brother, but he finally realizes that Georgie is better off on Heartland than he is.

Locations

The series is mainly produced in Calgary, Millarville and High River in Alberta, Canada.

The ranch is located in Millarville, Alberta, Canada. It is a private property. The ranch house where the family lives in the series serves only as an exterior backdrop. Interior shots of the house take place in the studio. Likewise the barn; a real one on the ranch and a replica on the studio grounds. Depending on what is more suitable in terms of shooting, one or the other is used as the location.

For the fictional city of “Hudson”, High River is used as a filming location, where “Maggie's Diner” can be found. However, this is not a regular restaurant, but only serves as a film set, both for indoor and outdoor shots. The diner is fully equipped like a real restaurant. The building can be viewed from the outside and is a coveted object that fans like to be photographed in front of.
