The Helgoland is a German seaside resort ship . The ship, which was built for around 31 million euros at the Fassmer shipyard, is operated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) and has been used in Helgoland service by the shipping company Cassen Eils since December 2015 .

The ship

The ship is around 83 meters long, 12.6 m wide and has a draft of 3.6 m. The gas-powered drive engine generates an output of 5,000 kW, so the ship can reach a top speed of 20  knots . The ship has around 1040 seats in eight saloon areas, which are spread over three decks and three upper deck areas. A hold for ten 10-foot containers (or two 20-foot containers ) as well as general cargo was set up in the fore section . An on-board crane that can lift up to 10 tons was installed for this purpose.

The Helgoland is the first new building under the German flag with internal combustion engines powered by LNG. At the end of 2014, the hull built at a Polish shipyard (hull) came to the Fassmer shipyard in Berne on the Weser. She installed the technical equipment and interior fittings.

The construction of the ship was funded as part of the European Commission's TEN-T program for the construction and expansion of transport infrastructure. The aim was the year-round connection of the Heligoland peripheral region in the European Union by means of a ferry with an LNG drive system for combined passenger and freight transport.

Propulsion system

The propulsion system consists of two Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines (DF) for propeller drive and diesel engines equipped for gas operation . These are ignited with a small amount (1–5% of the total fuel) of ignition oil, usually diesel fuel, which is injected under high pressure. Three auxiliary motors with 500 kW each were installed for power supply. In these gasoline engines , which are set up for pure gas operation , the fuel-air mixture is ignited with spark plugs.

The arrangement of the drive system with gearbox and the possibility of power take-off (PTO = Power Take Off) and power supply (PTI = Power Take In) ensures a flexible mode of operation that ensures good utilization of all engines. The PTOs behind the main motors are used to drive shaft generators , which can also be operated as electric motors (PTI), so that the auxiliary motors then support the main motors.

The LNG system consists of the devices for evaporation and processing of the liquid natural gas as well as the safety devices. The liquefied gas is stored in a gas tank located amidships that is regularly filled by tank trucks . The LNG is fetched from a Belgian or Dutch port, as there is no LNG terminal and no LNG bunker boat in Germany yet.

Passenger area

The passenger levels extend over three decks and include eight salons: on deck 2 there are the “lobster booths”, the “Düne Süd” club and the “Neuwerk” salon. The on-board restaurant, the gourmet restaurant "Knieper" and the salon areas "Kugelbake" and "Alte Liebe" are located on deck 3. In the “Sansi-Bar” at the back you have a good view of the aft deck, which can be reached from here. On deck 4 there is the sun deck with benches, sun loungers and table places, there is also a catering offer here. Deck 5 can be reached via the atrium, here is the "Süllberg" sky bar. From here you can also get to the open deck in front. Even further ahead is the observation deck with a children's area; here the youngsters can “steer” the ship.

The Helgoland is a mail boat and on it sent Shipmail receive a special postmark . The rectangular special postmark shows (from top to bottom) a side view of the ship, the logo of the shipping company and the text "Helgoland Fahrt" [sic!].

Baptism and maiden voyage

The christening and handover of the new Heligoland to the shipping company Cassen Eils, originally planned for July 2015 , was postponed to December 2015. There were various reasons for this, which were essentially related to the drive technology. This resulted in time-consuming changes. This also applied to the sensors required for gas operation and the ship-specific control technology including the programming of the systems. In some cases, structural adaptations and costly changes were the result. On December 11th, Christa Eils, former managing director and widow of the shipping company founder, baptized the ship at the Alte Liebe in Cuxhaven with the name "Helgoland". The shipping company thus followed a long tradition and named the new flagship of the fleet after its travel destination.

Average on December 31, 2017

On December 31, 2017, the ship collided with a jetty and two sailing yachts while berthing in the southern harbor of Heligoland. According to the shipping company, this was due to a malfunction of the bow thruster . Passengers were not harmed in the accident. Scheduled flights to Helgoland was for the period of repair of Helgoland by Funny Girl taken.
