Hellevad Sogn ( German: Hellewatt ) is a parish municipality ( Danish : Sogn ) in North Schleswig in southern Denmark . Until 1970 it belonged to Harde Sønder Rangstrup Herred in what was then Aabenraa-Sønderborg Amt, then to Rødekro Kommune in what was then Sønderjyllands Amt , which was merged into the "new" Aabenraa commune in the Syddanmark region as part of the local government reform on January 1, 2007 .

The stately Romanesque village church of Hellevad forms the center of Hellevad Sogn.

Municipal area

Hellevad is located west of Aabenraa (Eng .: Aabenraa ) on the Schleswig Geest, which is very flat here . On January 1, 2020, the municipality had 938 inhabitants on an area of over 35 km², 531 of whom lived in Hellevad.

Neighboring communities are in the west Bedsted Sogn (German: Bedstedt ), in the north Agerskov Sogn (German: Aggerschau ), in the east Egvad Sogn (German: Ekwatt ), in the south Hjordkær Sogn (German: Jordkirch ) and Ravsted Sogn (German : Ekwatt ) .: Rapstedt ).

history

In the Middle Ages, Hellevad belonged to the Harde Sønder Rangstrup Herred (Engl .: Süderrangstrup- Harde ) in the Duchy of Schleswig . Together with the Rise Herred (German: Ries-Harde ) and the Birk Varnæs (German: Warnitz ), it formed the Aabenraa from the 14th century . When the country was divided in 1490, 1544 and 1581, Hellevad came almost completely to the Gottorf part of the country. Even before the Reformation, Hellewatt formed a dual pastoral office with Ekwatt, which was administered by a priest.

After the German-Danish War in 1864, the Duchy of Schleswig fell to Prussia . Hellewatt was divided into six small rural communities in 1869: Hellewatt (Hellevad) in the east, Hüdewatt (Hydevad) in the southeast, Örsleff (Ørslev) in the north, Hinderup in the north-west, Schweilund (Svejlund) in the south-west and Klautoft (Klovtoft) in the south. However, the tiny communities of Hinderup and Schweilund were annexed to Örsleff and Klautoft in 1894/95.

In 1920, following a referendum, the whole of Northern Schleswig was incorporated into Denmark . In the parish of Hellewatt, 204 eligible voters had voted for Denmark and 84 for Germany. Hellevad became a unified municipality in the Aabenraa district . The southern hinterland was lost due to the new border. Hellevad has remained an agricultural area and has functioned until recently as a shopping area for the sparsely populated surrounding area. With the administrative reform in 1970, Hellevad became part of the larger municipality of Rødekro (German: Rothenkrug ). In 2007 this went on in the Aabenraa municipality .
