The Rødekro Kommune (German Rothenkrug ) was a municipality in Sønderjyllands Amt / Nordschleswig , Denmark . It was created in 1970 by merging the rural communities Egvad (German Eckwatt ), Hellevad ( Hellewatt ), Hjordkær ( Jordkirch ), Øster Løgum ( Osterlügum ) and most of Rise (German Ries ). Since 2007 it has been part of Aabenraa Municipality ( Aabenraa ).

history

The place Rødekro was only created after the railway from Flensburg to Fredericia was completed in 1864 and a branch line was built in 1869 to the port city of Aabenraa, six kilometers away. Especially at the expense of the latter, Rødekro developed into a classic train station location. In the 20th century, the importance grew, especially since more and more traffic shifted to the street and numerous businesses settled in the inexpensive and easily accessible area of the place. This function was reinforced by the construction of the E 45 , which made the town even more of a traffic junction.

However, Rødekro has not yet formed an independent municipality. From 1871 to 1920 the settlement was divided between the rural communities of Lunderup and Brunde. After these were united to the rural community Rise in 1920, the place continued to grow and partially crossed the border to the neighboring church Hjordkær. Only the local reform in 1970 brought Rødekro uniform administrative structures. The place was the economic center of the new commune, formed from five parishes, and even gave it its name.

In 2007 the municipalities of Rødekro, Lundtoft , Bov , Tinglev and Aabenraa merged to form the new municipality of Aabenraa with around 60,000 inhabitants, with the traditional port city forming the center. However, the former Rødekroer Mayor Tove Larsen ( Social Democrats ) was elected first mayor in the local elections in 2005 and 2009 .
