List of Danish and German place names for places in Denmark . The most important cities and towns that have a commonly used German name today are shown in bold .

Historical terms that are no longer common in general use (but sometimes in historical terms) are shown in italics .

Most of the places are in North Schleswig / South Jutland , which belonged to the province of Schleswig-Holstein in Prussia from 1864 (1866) to 1920 . The Danish Duchy of Schleswig was increasingly administered in German as early as the 14th century, first by the Holstein noble family Schauenburg , from 1460 by the Danish King as Duke, 1523–1848 by the Copenhagen German Chancellery .
