Life

Schierhorn passed his Abitur in 1953 at the Otto von Guericke Oberschule in Magdeburg . From 1953 to 1956 an apprenticeship as a chemical skilled worker at the company vocational school "Heinz Kapelle" of the VEB Fahlberg-List in Magdeburg- Westerhüsen followed.

From 1956 he studied medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin . After completing his studies in 1961, he became an assistant doctor to Anton Waldeyer (1901–1970) at the Anatomical Institute of Humboldt University. Schierhorn then took up a compulsory assistant job at the Medical Academy Magdeburg in order to obtain the full clinical license . From April 1966 he was assistant to Martin Meyer at the Anatomical Institute of the Medical Academy . Here he received his doctorate in 1967 with a thesis on special cells of the amphibian skin. He became a specialist in anatomy and in 1969 teaching assistant. From 1970 he worked as a senior physician .

Between 1969 and 1978 he headed the neuroanatomy working group of the Anatomical Institute. From 1970 to 1978 he was a member of the Scientific Council for the main research area neurobiology at the Magdeburg Medical Academy. In 1976 he completed his habilitation and from 1982 was a lecturer in anatomy.

He became known to a specialist audience through scientific work. Research focus was the neuro- histology . The proof of different distribution of the spines in the tip end dendrites goes back to him . Further work dealt with the change in the structure of neocortical nerve cells in the pyramidal tracts in older people. In addition, Schierhorn dealt with questions relating to the history of medicine . He published works on Johann Friedrich Meckel (1724–1774) and his grandson Johann Friedrich Meckel the Elder. J. (1781–1833), Karl Ernst von Baer (1792–1876), Johann Christian Gustav Lucae (1814–1885), Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring (1755–1830) and Otto Deiters (1834–1863), who also received international attention found.
