Helmut Mattis

Helmut Mattis (born August 7, 1905 in Groß-Lichterfelde ; † April 30, 1987 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Mattis was the son of a carpenter and attended a high school , later he became a bookseller . As early as 1920 he was a member of the Socialist Workers 'Youth (SAJ), from 1925 a member of the SPD and the Central Employees' Association . From 1926 to 1933 Mattis was union secretary. When the National Socialists " seized power " , he became unemployed and was temporarily in prison. From 1936 to 1944 he was a commercial clerk. In 1945 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht .

After the Second World War Mattis became politically active again and was elected to the city council of Greater Berlin in 1946 , but left after a few weeks because he was elected district mayor in the Steglitz district. From 1951 he was a district councilor in the Schöneberg district . In 1956 he was elected as district mayor in the Wedding district until he retired in 1970.

From 1969 to 1971 Mattis was chairman of the Europa-Union Berlin .
