Helmut Melchert

Helmut Melchert (born September 24, 1910 in Kiel , † September 12, 1991 in Hamburg ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Born as the son of a senior tax clerk, Melchert studied musicology and piano playing from 1930 , first at the Academy of Arts , then at the Hamburg University of Music . During his studies in 1931 he became a member of the Normannia fraternity in Berlin and in 1939 was a member of the Priebus comradeship .

From 1934 he studied singing . In 1936 he made his debut as a concert singer and began his stage career in 1939 at the Wuppertal Opera House . There he was involved in the world premiere of the opera Fürstin Tarakanowa by Boris Blacher in 1941 . In 1943 he went to the Hamburg State Opera , where he made a name for himself as a Wagner tenor and performed until 1977. After 1945 he had numerous guest roles, including at the Städtische Oper Berlin , the Covent Garden Opera in London , in Vienna , Düsseldorf , Amsterdam and in Munich . In 1954, he took part in the world premiere of Wolfgang Fortner's opera Der Wald at the Essen Opera House . In 1957 he was involved in the scenic world premiere of Arnold Schönberg's Moses und Aron as Aron at the Zurich Opera House .

From 1961 to 1975 he had a teaching position at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater .
