Helmut Schönefeld (born March 27, 1916 in Erlangen , † April 15, 1997 in Bonn ) was a German lieutenant general .

Life

Schönefeld was born in Erlangen in 1916 as the son of a theologian and classical philologist. After graduating from high school in Eisenach / Thuringia in 1934 , he became a soldier and began his career as a flag junior in the 1st Prussian intelligence department in Königsberg / Prussia. He was trained as an officer at the Dresden Infantry School and the Halle Army Intelligence School. On April 1, 1936, he was promoted to lieutenant . In 1942 he was trained as a general staff officer. He was u. a. General Staff Officer in the Operations Department of the General Staff of the Army under Generals Heusinger and Wenck . At the end of the war, Schönefeld was 1st General Staff Officer (I a) in the "Hoch- und Deutschmeister" division .

After 1945 he worked as a bricklayer and brickworker in Westphalia. He studied structural engineering (specializing in architecture) at the TH Hannover and graduated in 1949 with the diploma examination (Dipl.-Ing.). From 1950 to 1955 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Building Research eV in Hanover with Wolfgang Triebel . He received his doctorate in 1953 with a thesis on the work-related and work-physiological rationalization of conventional designs.

In 1956 Schönfeld joined the Bundeswehr, which was under construction, as a lieutenant colonel . At first he was active in the command staff of the Bundeswehr and in the territorial defense command , where he had to resume the work of the former fortress pioneer work as a consultant for fortified structures. From 1959 to 1963 he was the commander of a pioneer regiment. During this time, a heavy floating bridge for all military load classes was first built across the Rhine.

In 1963 Schönefeld became an armaments officer in the army command staff . During this time, among other things, decisions were made about the introduction of the " Leopard " battle tank , the demands for the development of the German armored personnel carrier "family", the further development of the army's anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons and the first negotiations on the multilateral development of battle tanks, among other things. Artillery weapons and reconnaissance drones within NATO. From April 1, 1966, Schönefeld headed the Defense Technology Land subdivision in the Federal Ministry of Defense . In international armaments cooperation, he represented the Federal Minister of Defense, among other things, in the top NATO committee for armament issues for land forces.

On August 1, 1966, Schönefeld was promoted to Brigadier General . In 1968 he took over command of the 4th Panzer Grenadier Division in Regensburg and was promoted to major general on November 4, 1968 . In the fall of 1970, Schönefeld took over from General Thilo as Lieutenant General and Commanding General of the II Corps in Ulm . In 1976 Schönefeld retired, which he spent in Bonn-Bad Godesberg.
