Helmut Schreiber (born November 16, 1925 in Mühlhausen ; † February 10, 1995 in Bad Reichenhall ) was a German actor and writer who became famous primarily for his portrayals in DEFA and DFF films.

life and work

After studying philosophy , German language and literature and art history, he studied art in the field of directing and acting at a theater college. He made his acting debut in Bad Hersfeld after the war, engagements in Karl-Marx-Stadt, Dresden and Leipzig followed. In parallel to his stage work, he also played in film and television productions for DEFA and German TV broadcasters (DFF) from the 1950s and became a member of the DEFA theater ensemble.

He became known through his participation in fairy tale films such as Sleeping Beauty , in DEFA Indian films , where he often appeared as a villain . He became one of the busiest actors in the GDR in the 1960s. For his stunts he received the title of honor cascadeur . In addition to his screen work, Schreiber also moderated children's programs - for example the Flickerstunde -, worked for dubbing studios and wrote several scripts. As an author, he also wrote children's books and works for ballet performances.

The artist was married to the Polish actress Zofia Słaboszowska .
