… Damn it, I'm grown up is a German youth film from DEFA by Rolf Losansky from 1974. It is based on the novel of the same name by Joachim Nowotny .

action

15-year-old Klaus Kambor, also known as crank, has his little paradise near his village in Lusatia . Here is a small lake on which he can observe nature undisturbed on a self-made raft and pursue his dreams. These revolve mainly around his girlfriend Daniela, whom he was allowed to kiss before. He lives with his parents and several other flatmates on a remote old mill site, where only apartments are rented. This also applies to Paul Honko, who often drinks a little too much, with his wife and daughter Elisabeth. But since crank is now slowly growing up, he used his strength to hold back the drunk Mr. Honko from rioting. He also survived drinking a bottle of rhubarb wine with his friend Piepe Jatzmauk almost unscathed. So one day he sees his grandmother Slabke laboriously trying to cut the hard dry grass from the previous year with a scythe. As strong as crank, he does the work for his grandma. But after a certain time it becomes too difficult for him and he comes up with the idea that it would be easier to burn it down and set the weed on fire. With the rising wind his action gets out of control. The kindergarten teacher Ms. Kandidel sees the smoke from the window and sets off a fire alarm. Crank is now frightened and disappears from the scene of the fire. Since he skipped school the next day, he lost the friendship of Daniela, the forester's daughter. The shoemaker Jubke sends him to the village with repaired shoes and he is supposed to bring the broken ones back with him. This task seems like running the gauntlet. At a school roll call, Kurbel's irresponsible behavior is evaluated and Daniela also suggests training young fire protection workers from the 5th grade onwards. It's all too much.

But something is going on. The rumor is growing that the village will give way to the construction of a large power station. When construction workers move into quarters in the Buschmühle, everything is finally clear. With the workers is Jule Bucht, who falls in love with Elisabeth Honko. None of his colleagues know that he is married and has a child. This only comes out when his wife visits him and wants to confront him. But Jule, who is now friends with Kurb, stands by Elisabeth and wants to get a divorce. It goes without saying that he will take care of his child. Teacher Konzak, who strongly supports crank, falls in love with Mrs. Kandidel and the two will soon get married, which the class also has a certain share in. The efforts of Kurbel's schoolmate Gudrun to take Daniela's place are unsuccessful. The construction work for the power station continues and the idyll around the area loses its charm. Klaus Kambor is growing up - also with the help of Daniela.

criticism

The daily newspaper Neues Deutschland found that it had not been possible to include the character of the crank intensely enough throughout the entire film. However, the director was praised for his precise observation of the milieu and for the appropriate selection of actors and laypeople and the work with them. The Norddeutsche Zeitung described ... damn it, I grew up as one of the happiest productions of 1974. The cameraman photographed the film with great sensitivity. For the film service was ... damn, I am grown up a "thematically interesting youth film about puberty problems and social behavior, which is captivating in its direct and uncomplicated way and thus lets forget some staging defects."
