Turlis Adventure is a DEFA fairy tale film by Walter Beck from 1967. It is based on motifs from the story Pinocchio Adventure by Carlo Collodi .

action

One day toy maker Kasimir is brought a large piece of wood by the pupil Pippifax. Soon it starts to speak and Kasimir carves a boy figure out of him, which he names "Arturo", or "Turli" for short, after his best friend Arturo Eisenbeiß. He moves his jacket for him and buys him a primer because Turli is supposed to go to school. On the way to school, however, Turli stops at a puppet theater . He has no money to enter and therefore sells his primer to the fox Mirzilla and the cat Eusebius, the henchmen of the donkey dealer Muriel. He not only wants to prevent education and therefore burns all the school books that his henchmen get hold of, but also expects an attraction in Turli that should keep children away from school. The two henchmen are supposed to take Turli prisoner. He received money for Kasimir from the puppeteer, who turns out to be Arturo Eisenbeiß, which Muriel's henchmen are also targeting. They try to catch Turli, but prove unable. The alarmed Turli can save himself from the two to the fairy godmother Euphrosina and her poodle, who in turn bring Kasimir to them. Euphrosina knows that only a selfless act could make Turli a living boy.

Kasimir is happy to see Turli again. Mirzilla and Eusebius have not given up yet, however. They use a trick to lure Turli away from Euphrosina's house and steal the money from him. Muriel appears and takes Turli with him. In his realm he is supposed to learn to play the organ organ , but can flee. Kasimir looks for him in vain. He finally suspects him to be on a small island in the sea, gets caught in a storm while crossing, his boat capsizes and he is swallowed by a giant fish. Since the fish only appears once a month, Turli, who has meanwhile arrived at the beach, can only then save his father. Meanwhile, he goes to school voluntarily, but is mocked as a doll by classmates. Pippifax is also among them. Eusebius appears at the classroom window and secretly distributes sweets among the students. The candy wrapper encourages all children to meet at night to make their way to the play area. All children, including Turli, who was initially hesitant, come to Spielimmerland, which Muriel supervises. Working is forbidden and Muriel would also like to get rid of thinking. When the children build a sand castle, Muriel destroys it, and when Turli rehearses a play with the children, he interrupts the performance. Turli is named "King of Spielimmerland" and all the children who then meet him as subjects turn into donkeys a short time later.

Turli and Pippifax also become donkeys and have to perform together in Director Whipbang's circus. Euphrosina and her poodle are also in the audience. When Turli refuses to perform a feat, he is punished with a crack of the whip - the audience leaves the circus in horror and Turli and Pippifax stay behind. Turli turns back into a wooden man. Euphrosina and the poodle inform him that the giant fish is swimming near the shore again and Turli succeeds in rescuing Casimir from the fish's belly. Together with Pippifax, they rush to Spielimmerland to warn the newly arrived children about Muriel. First, Muriel manages to portray Turli as a liar and Casimir as a confused old man. When Muriel attacks Turli and threatens Casimir, the children Muriel, Mirzilla and Eusebius chase into the sea. Here the three are devoured by the giant fish. All donkeys turn into children again. Turli takes on human form for his selfless act and now goes to school and puppet theater like all other children.

criticism

The contemporary criticism was unsure whether the characters in the film and the sometimes demanding dialogues could be understood by children from the age of 6: “I think the little ones will only enjoy a lot as an element of the plot. So much of the effect of this film is lost, ”said one critic.

The film service called Turlis Adventure a “children's film with a fairytale character based on the 'Pinocchio' material. Stylistically appealing due to the interaction of real actors with marionettes. "

For Cinema , the film was an “imaginative 'Pinocchio' variant”.
