Helmut Steger

Helmut Steger (* 1948 ) is a German music teacher , choir director and composer .

Life

Helmut Steger studied music education at the Heidelberg-Mannheim University of Music and at the University of Heidelberg . As a high school music teacher, he then worked in schools in Aalen and Ulm for almost 20 years.

In addition to his main activity in music education, Steger also led various types of choir such as school choir, chamber choir, choral society, choir and soloist ensemble. On the recommendation of the German choirmaster Gottfried Wolters, he also worked for 30 years on the national board of the Association of Working Group Music in the Young (AMJ) and was its chairman from 2000 to 2006 . He also worked as a manager for the European Choir Association, the European Federation of Young Choirs, »Europa cantat« . Steger is co-founder, co-organizer, lecturer and jury member at German and European festivals and competitions.

From 1985 to 1997, Steger's main focus was on working with the Ulm children's and youth choir Ulmer Spatzen . Under his leadership, the Sparrow Choir won numerous prizes in competitions. There were premieres and world premieres as well as concert tours in the USA , Japan , Great Britain and Russia .

With a group of singers of the Ulmer Spatzen who had retired from the youth choir due to age , Steger founded a new chamber choir for women in Ulm , for which he chose the name Cantus Novus Ulm . With this choir he won a 2nd prize in the women's choir category and a special prize at the German choir competitions in 1998 ( Regensburg ) and 2002 ( Osnabrück ) .

From 1998 to 2003 Helmut Steger conducted the Stadtsingechor zu Halle in Halle (Saale) . With this boys 'choir he won first prize and a special prize in the boys' choirs category at the 2002 German Choir Competition in Osnabrück .

Helmut Steger is also active as a composer. The world premieres of his works often take place as part of concert performances by his choirs, with which he has already recorded three CDs . He lives as a freelance choir director and lecturer in Greater Saxony , a suburb of Hirschberg an der Bergstrasse . There he was a co-founder of the association "Musik in Hirschberg" in 2015, of which he is chairman.
