Henning John from Freyend

Henning John von Freyend (born August 13, 1941 in Hamburg ) is a German artist .

life and work

After graduating from high school at Birklehof in Hinterzarten , Henning John von Freyend studied methodology of form and image design from 1963 to 1968 at the general trade school in Basel (class of Armin Hofmann). After a first trip to the USA in 1966, he first worked as a commercial artist in New York City in 1968 . In 1969 he founded the artist group EXIT in Cologne , together with Berndt Höppner and Thomas Hornemann . After experiments with screen printing , he turned to oil painting , which is still the focus of his artistic work today.

From 1969 to 1975 Henning John von Freyend was in close contact with the writer Rolf Dieter Brinkmann , whose radical subjectivism was of central importance for the artistic development of John von Freyend. He portrayed the writer friend several times during his lifetime as if posthumously in oil. An extensive correspondence between Brinkmann and John von Freyend still awaits publication. In portraiture, the artist has repeatedly dealt with other personalities of contemporary history, such as John F. Kennedy , Marcel Reich-Ranicki , Michael Klett or Dieter Wellershoff .

Since 1977 John von Freyend has exhibited his artistic work in solo and group exhibitions in Cologne, Marbach , Munich and other places. From 1977 to 1979 he stayed in Rio de Janeiro . After Cologne (1970–1983) and Erftstadt (1983–2000), the painter has been running his studio since 2000 on a former farm in Vettweiß- Sievernich.

John von Freyend's pictures are in numerous private and public collections, including a. the Deutsche Bundesbank in Frankfurt, the central and state library in Berlin, the Heinrich Heine Institute in Düsseldorf, the University of Music in Cologne or the bishop's residence in Würzburg. Reinhold Neven DuMont acquired one of his first oil paintings for the Kiepenheuer & Witsch publishing house as early as 1970 .

Henning John von Freyend lives with the writer Linda Pfeiffer in Sievernich .

  1. Harald Bergmann's multi-part film project Brinkmanns Zorn also dealt with this friendship. The booklet for the DVD edition says: "The second DVD is dedicated to the workbooks and collages that were created between 1971-73. Brinkmann and his friend Henning John von Freyend, a painter, went to an old mill withdrawn to find out with him what they actually want, in their life, in their art.
