Henry Huntly Haight (born May 20, 1825 in Rochester , Monroe County , New York , † September 2, 1878 in San Francisco , California ) was the tenth governor of California from 1867 to 1871 .

Career

Henry Huntly Haight graduated from Yale University with a law degree , which he successfully completed in 1844. He then joined his father's law firm, who had settled in St. Louis , Missouri . After a while he went into business for himself in San Francisco, California, and gained a good reputation as a lawyer.

In 1859 he became chairman of the Republican Party of California. A little later he turned to the Democratic Party . On September 4, 1867, he was elected 10th Governor of California; on December 5 of the same year he entered the four-year term. During this time, the transcontinental railroad connecting California to the east coast was completed. In addition, the Golden Gate Park was designed. Haight reduced the national debt and reorganized the health care system in California. Even so, he did not succeed in being re-elected. He therefore left office on December 8, 1871.

After his time as governor, he worked again as a lawyer. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of California . In 1878 he wanted to return to the political stage. However, this did not happen because he died in the same year.
