Henry Walston, Baron Walston

Henry David Leonard George Walston, Baron Walston CVO JP ( June 16, 1912 - May 29, 1991 ) was a British farmer and politician of the Liberal Party , the Labor Party and, most recently, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), five times without Success had run for a seat in the House of Commons , in 1961 when Life Peer became a member of the House of Lords under the Life Peerages Act 1958 and was a member of both the Council of Europe and the European Parliament .

Life

Unsuccessful lower house candidacies

Walston, son of archaeologist Charles Waldstein , completed after the visit of Eton College to study at King's College of the University of Cambridge and was during the Second World War between 1939 and 1945 member of the War Council of Agriculture of Huntingdonshire .

After the end of the war he ran in the general election on July 5, 1945 in the constituency of Huntingdonshire for the Liberal Party for the first time unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons. He then served as Director of Agriculture in the British Zone of Occupation in Germany between 1946 and 1947 and, on his return to Great Britain, from 1948 to 1950 as an advisor to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster . Shortly thereafter moved Walston, who occasionally also magistrate ( Justice of the Peace ), was the Labor Party and a candidate for this success in the general election on October 25, 1951 and on May 26, 1955 in the constituency Cambridgeshire. His candidacies for the Labor Party in the Gainsborough constituency in the by-election on February 14, 1956 and in the general election on October 8, 1959 were unsuccessful.

Member of the House of Lords, the Council of Europe and the European Parliament

By a letters patent from February 10, 1961 Walston was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Walston , of Newton in the County of Cambridge, to the nobility and was thus a member of the House of Lords until his death. Its introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the upper house took place on 12 April 1961st

After the Labor Party's victory in the general election on October 15, 1964 , Prime Minister Harold Wilson appointed him Undersecretary of State to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office , where he was at the same time agricultural adviser for Germany to then Foreign Minister Patrick Gordon Walker , Michael, until 1967 Stewart and most recently George Brown . He then served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Board of Trade between 1967 and the end of Prime Minister Wilson's tenure on June 19, 1970 , making him one of the closest collaborators to the then Presidents of the Board of Trade Anthony Crosland , Roy Mason and finally by Richard Noble .

Walson, who was also chairman of the think tank Institute of Race Relations between 1968 and 1971 , was also a member of the Council of Europe between 1970 and 1975 and was then appointed member of the European Parliament from 1975 to 1977 . For his long service, he was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order on January 1, 1976 .

After about thirty years of membership, he left the Labor Party in 1981 and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) founded by the four former Labor politicians Roy Jenkins , David Owen , Bill Rodgers and Shirley Williams . Walston engaged beyond temporarily as Vice Chairman and Vice President of the Royal Commonwealth Society , a social organization for the promotion of the culture of the Commonwealth of Nations , as well as directors ( governor ) of the London Borough of Southwark nearby Guy's Hospital .
