Charles Waldstein
Charles Waldstein later Sir Charles Walston (born March 30, 1856 in New York , † March 21, 1927 in Naples ) was an English - American classical archaeologist .
Life
Waldstein came from a Jewish family in New York. He studied 1871–1873 archeology at Columbia University in New York and 1873–75 at Heidelberg University , where he received his doctorate in 1875. In 1876 he briefly studied law at the University of Leipzig , but then went to London. 1878–79 he made research trips to Italy and Greece. In 1880 Waldstein was first lecturer ( lecturer ) for classical archeology at the University of Cambridge and two years later reader at the same university. From 1883 to 1889 he was director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge . In 1883 he became a Fellow of King's College in London. He was also a personal acquaintance and correspondent of Karl Marx . In 1889 he came to Athens and became director of the American School of Classical Studies . He held this position until 1893, later becoming a professor at the same school. In 1895 Waldstein returned to England and became Professor of Fine Art at Cambridge University Slade , a chair he held until 1901.
During his time in Greece he carried out excavations in Plataiai , Eretria and the Heraion of Argos . He later founded an international committee for the excavations of Herculaneum .
In 1912 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor . In 1918 he changed his name to Charles Walston. His son was the politician Henry Walston, Baron Walston .
Olympic Games 1896
Waldstein took part in the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens as a marksman . He took part in the rifle competition. Its result and its place are unknown. He was the oldest participant in the entire field of athletes at these Olympic Games.
