Georg Martin Adolph von Henselt (also Adolf Henselt ; last name also in the spelling Hanselt ; * May 9, 1814 in Schwabach ; † October 10, 1889 in Bad Warmbrunn , district of Hirschberg ) was an originally German, later Russian composer , piano virtuoso and piano pedagogue .

Life

In 1817 the family moved to Munich, where Henselt received music lessons for the first time. At the age of three he began to learn the violin, and when he was five he began to play the pianoforte under Privy Councilor Josepha von Flad, née. Chancellor who, like Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer, was a student of Georg Joseph Vogler . In 1832, Henselt received a royal scholarship from King Ludwig I and completed six months of piano studies with the well-known Mozart student Johann Nepomuk Hummel in Weimar .

His first official public appearance, which took place in Munich on November 29, 1832, received enthusiastic praise.

Until 1834, Henselt studied composition in Vienna with Simon Sechter (who later became Anton Bruckner's teacher ). He stayed there for two years and continued to develop his virtuosity and technique. In 1836 he met Frédéric Chopin in Karlsbad . This was followed by four years of concert activity as a pianist in German and Russian music centers with legendary success. The dizzying height of his technique and the soulfulness of his presentation were praised. Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt were enthusiastic about his compositions.

In 1837, Henselt stayed in Breslau for several months . On October 24, 1837, he married the divorced Rosalie Vogel (née Manger), a friend of Goethe, in Bad Salzbrunn, Silesia .

In 1838, Adolph Henselt was appointed imperial court pianist to the tsarina and general music inspector of the imperial child-raising homes in Saint Petersburg . From this position he worked for the next forty years as a teacher in the musical centers of Russia and gave the Russian piano virtuosity essential impulses. This activity was interrupted by summer vacation trips mainly to Germany, especially to Silesia . In 1876 Henselt was raised to the Russian nobility.

On October 10, 1889, Henselt died of a heart condition during a spa stay in Bad Warmbrunn in the Giant Mountains .

In recognition of his services, his hometown Schwabach dedicated the Henseltweg through the Schwabach Valley to him and named the Adolph von Henselt Music School after him. The Schwabach City Museum houses the so-called Henselt Archive and the permanent exhibition of the Henselt Studio. The International Adolph Henselt Society documents, researches and presents the work of Adolph Henselt as a central point of contact.
