Herbert Burgmüller

Herbert Burgmüller (born September 4, 1913 in Mülheim an der Ruhr , † April 28, 1970 in Nuremberg ) was a German writer .

Live and act

After Herbert Burgsmüller trained as a librarian had graduated, studied it literary history at the University of Vienna . At times he maintained contact with the circle around the journal Resistance , published by the national Bolshevik Ernst Niekisch , which was banned in 1934. Burgmüller stayed in Austria during the following years . During this time he wrote essays on cultural-political topics and in 1936 published the literary magazine Das Silberboot in Salzburg . The story Gang in den Herbst , published in 1938, was disapproved by the literary criticism of the Third Reich because of its pessimistic attitude; otherwise Burgmüller remained unmolested. From 1938 to 1943 he found a job as a librarian at the city library of his hometown Mülheim an der Ruhr. The local mayor, Edwin Hasenjaeger , had given him this position against resistance from the local NSDAP district leadership. Burgmüller was listed on Goebbels ' list of approved film authors in 1944 .

After the end of the Second World War , Burgmüller worked from 1945 to 1946 at the Düsseldorf City Theater and then until 1948 co-editor of the Munich literary magazine Die Fähre , which u. a. Published texts by exiled authors such as Hermann Broch and Robert Musil and by Hans Henny Jahnn , who was suppressed between 1933 and 1945 . He lived in Ottobrunn near Munich and Mülheim an der Ruhr .

In addition to his journalistic work, Herbert Burgmüller was the author of narrative works and film scripts . He had been a member of the German PEN Center since 1949 , of which he was Secretary General from 1953.
