Herbert Hömig

Herbert Hömig (born September 22, 1941 in Gotha ; † July 15, 2020 in Cologne ) was a German historian and university professor .

life and work

Hömig graduated from high school in Cologne-Deutz in 1962 . During his studies in 1964 he became a member of the Unitas-Nibelung Cologne in the Association of Scientific Catholic Student Associations Unitas . In 1968 he completed his studies in history , German and philosophy at the University of Cologne with the state examination for teaching at grammar schools and then did his doctorate under Adam Wandruszka on the role of the Rhenish Catholics and liberals in the disputes over the Prussian constitution of 1850 . In 1970 he passed the second state examination in Düsseldorf. After completing his habilitation in Cologne in 1976 with a thesis on the Center Party in the Weimar Republic , he initially took over a professorship at RWTH Aachen University in 1980 . From 1990 he taught as a professor of modern history at the University of Dortmund and since the late 1970s has also held lectures at the University of Cologne. In the winter semester 1991/92 he accepted a guest lecturing assignment at the University of Leipzig . In 2008 he retired.

In the decade before the fall of the Wall , he was elected President of the ( West German ) "Thuringia Foundation". Hömig served as an honorary senator of the Academy of Non-Profit Sciences in Erfurt , which was established in 1754 and of which he had been a member since 1990. He was a member of the Society for Rhenish History .

Hömig's main research interests were constitutional and party history (especially Prussia) in the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of political ideas and the modern history of the Rhineland and Thuringia. Hömig was editor of the journal Kultur und Geschichte Thüringens , which was discontinued in 1990. He published the Erfurt- affiliated “Subsidia academica” on contemporary history. He was an archivist for the Unitas Association and worked as a student historian .
