Herbert Knabe (born May 16, 1918 in Gotha ; † May 26, 2009 in Greifswald ) was a German social medicine specialist and social hygienist . He dealt in particular with the state of health and basic medical care of the rural population.

Life

The son of a bank clerk attended elementary school from 1925 and from 1929 to 1937 the Ernestinum grammar school in Gotha. From 1940 to 1945 he studied medicine at the Universities of Leipzig and Halle . In addition, from 1939 until the end of the war, he initially served in an anti-aircraft company of the Air Force, later he was a medical ensign and doctor in a hospital train . He received his doctorate from the University of Halle in 1945 . He then worked in the Gelbensande military hospital near Rostock until 1947 . He then worked as a district doctor in Schönberg (Mecklenburg) until 1952 , where he was primarily responsible for disease protection. In 1951 he was awarded the title of " Honored Doctor of the People ".

In 1952 he went to Greifswald as a district doctor, where he qualified as a specialist in hygiene in 1954. In 1957 he was a member of the Medical Commission at the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED . With a thesis on the living conditions and the state of health of the rural population , he completed his habilitation in 1959 at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald . In the same year he became senior physician at the Department of Social Hygiene at the Charité . From 1961 until his retirement in 1983 he held the chair for social hygiene (“Hygiene in the countryside”) at the University of Greifswald. He was involved in the community medicine project in Greifswald until he was old .

Herbert Knabe was a co-founder of the Society for General Medicine of the GDR and in 1961 was one of the founding members of the International Society for Agricultural Medicine. In 1974 he became president of the European section of this society.

He edited four books and published more than 200 scientific papers.
