Herbert Monkowski

Herbert Monkowski (born June 8, 1934 in Allenstein , Warmia ) is a German homeland researcher , publicist and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit .

Life

At the end of January 1945, the family fled from the approaching Red Arms to Pillau , then across the Baltic Sea on a mine boat, which took several shipwrecked people from the sinking Wilhelm Gustloff on board during the night of January 30, 1945 . Then they lived for a few months in Waren (Müritz) in an emergency shelter. However, after the occupation by the Soviet headquarters , they came back to the People's Republic of Poland in the summer of 1945 and lived in Jaroty (until 1945 Jomendorf ) near Olsztyn . Herbert Monkowski attended the Polish elementary school , learned the carpentry trade, worked in the Marceli Nowotko Carpenters Cooperative (Spółdzienia Stolarska im. Marcelego Nowotki) and after a few years passed the master craftsman's exams to become a cabinet maker and cabinet maker. As part of the family reunification , he and his family moved to Meinerzhagen ( Sauerland ) in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1966 . First he worked for around three years in a carpenter's business, then in the furniture wholesaler and finally at the Meinerzhagen city administration (cultural office).

After martial law was proclaimed in Poland in December 1981 , he founded the “Polenhilfe Meinerzhagen” and organized several truck transports with food, clothing, medicines and medical technology to Warmia between 1981 and 1983 . He was one of the founders and has worked since 1980 in the homeland yearbook "Jomen-Post" for the former residents of the church play BANY (since 1945 Bartąg ).

Herbert Monkowski has been a member of the Allenstein-Land e. V. and since April 2007 the district council chairman (until May 1, 2012). He is a longstanding member of the Federation of Expellees (Ortsverband Meinerzhagen) , since 1990 a member of the Allensteiner Society of German minority (AGDM) (Olsztyńskie Stowarzyszenie Mniejszości Niemieckiej) in Olsztyn, Friends of the City Allenstein (Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Olsztyna) and the Foundation Borussia .

In June 1990 in Olsztyn he received the badge “For Merit for Warmia and Mazury” (Odznaka “Zasłużonym dla Warmii i Mazur”) for his services and social commitment . In 1991 the Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit with ribbon. In June 1996 he was knighted by the Order of St. Stanislaus ( accolade from Juliusz Nowina-Sokolnicki ) and received the Order of St. Stanislaus ( officer's cross ). On January 30, 2010, the spokesman for the Landsmannschaft Ostpreußen eV presented him in the Ostheim in Bad Pyrmont . V. Wilhelm von Gottberg the gold medal of honor.

As district representative of the Allenstein-Land district community , Herbert Monkowski, together with the Polish Archbishop Wojciech Ziemba , the Polish District Administrator and the City President Olsztyns, invited the Grand Master and Abbot General of the Teutonic Order Dr. Bruno Platter in the Warmia. On July 3, 2010 five memorial stones were inaugurated along the "Bischofsweg" for former Warmian bishops. a. for the first Warmian bishop Anselm von Meißen (1210–1278). On April 14, 2011, the Voivodeship Marshal of the Warmia-Masurian Voivodeship Jacek Protas awarded Herbert Monkowski the Badge of Honor for Merit for the Warmia-Masurian Voivodeship (Odznaka honorowa za zasługi dla Województwa Warmińsko ) in the church in Groß Kleeberg (since 1945 Klebark Wielki ) ).
