Herbert Neumann (journalist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herbert Neumann (born December 26, 1926 in Berlin ) is a German sports journalist , book and television film author and book publisher.

Career

At the end of the 1950s Neumann left the increasingly isolated GDR . Some overly frank remarks caused him political problems. He moved to the Federal Republic of Germany in good time before the Wall was built .

He succeeds in gaining a foothold in the Hessian Rhine-Main area . First of all, he is staying in the “Schönen Aussicht”, a small guesthouse with a restaurant in Bergen-Enkheim , a suburb northeast of Frankfurt am Main with a predominantly rural character. He likes the area and later lived for decades in the neighboring Frankfurt district of Seckbach .

His main interest is sport , he plays in the football team of the FSV Frankfurt , skis and plays tennis . Neumann marries and has a son Bernd, who attends the Frankfurt Helmholtz School in the Ostend district . Despite his advancing age, Neumann does not neglect active sport; he continues to play football actively, for example in men's teams that are predominantly composed of teachers or lawyers.

The journalist is not satisfied with a purely descriptive role; he uses his function and his growing level of awareness and influence to help shape sport right down to local politics. Neumann and a small group of colleagues developed the idea for the Sports Ball held annually by the German Sports Aid Foundation from 1970 onwards under the patronage of the respective Federal President. Many a time he becomes the advisor to the then mail order king, Olympic dressage rider and Sporthilfe chairman Josef Neckermann . A lively exchange he cultivates with Jürgen Palm, the spiritual father of the German Sports Federation initiated mainstream sporting trim Trot action in the 1970s.

For populism, superficiality and a lack of seriousness, with which the general public is tormented today, he is not to be had:

" We citizens are getting more and more foam around our beards, we are wet shaved more often than we'd like ... "

- Herbert Neumann

Professional development

As a representative for washing machines, at the time of the so-called economic miracle in what was for him a new Federal Republic, he began to secure a living. But his real calling is journalism . He is making a name for himself as a freelance journalist, as a court reporter for the Frankfurter boulevard newspaper Abendpost Nachtausgabe and the reputable national Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung he accompanies proceedings in the courts, in particular his reports on the Auschwitz trials in 1963-1965 for which the Seckbach painter and graphic artist Erich Dittmann makes the court drawings. Finally he succeeds in combining his private interests more and more with his professional activities. For many years he looked after the Rhine-Main Sport FAZ editorial, is also known as FAZ commentator active, author , co-author and publisher of a variety of publications on major sporting events of international standing as Olympic Games , World Cups and German gymnastics festivals and TV movie writer.

In 1983, he is the German Gymnastics Federation appointed press officer of the German Gymnastics Festival in Frankfurt. He also fulfills this function at the subsequent events in Dortmund / Bochum and Hamburg.

Herbert Neumann has been with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on a freelance basis for around half a century and continues to publish articles there for the national newspaper, most recently about the International German Gymnastics Festival in Frankfurt am Main.
