Herbert Schalthoff

Herbert Schalthoff (born December 15, 1953 in Rhede ) is a German journalist and moderator . For many years he was the head of politics and talk show host at the regional Hamburg TV station Hamburg 1 .

Life

Origin and education

Herbert Schalthoff grew up as the son of a civil servant of the employment office and a housewife in the Münsterland and completed an apprenticeship as a social security clerk at the AOK after completing secondary school . Then he did his community service at a youth education center in Münster . He then made up his Abitur and studied social pedagogy and sociology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

Political activity

According to his own statements, Schalthoff was politicized by the anti-nuclear movement in the late 1970s . He then became a member of the Greens . After moving to Hamburg in 1980, when the Green Alternative List (GAL) moved into the Hamburg citizenship in 1982, he became its parliamentary group manager and spokesman. He later resigned from the party according to his own statements in order to document his political neutrality as a journalist.

Career as a journalist

In 1987 Schalthoff switched to the private Hamburg radio station OK Radio , for which he took over the city hall reporting. His broadcast format at the time was titled Schlag 6 .

On April 1, 1994, he started his TV career at the then newly founded private local broadcaster Hamburg 1 . First he developed the program there. From August 1995 he hosted his first live television show Schalthoff . Until his retirement in May 2019, Schalthoff carried out a total of around 1200 programs in this format, which he was also editor-in-chief. Later he also moderated the TV format asked about Hamburg 1, in which he asked guests about political, economic and social issues. In addition to his work as a television journalist, Schalthoff wrote articles for the Hamburger Abendblatt , Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag . In addition, he occasionally acted as a moderator of events and volunteered on the board of the State Press Conference Hamburg.

At the end of May 2019, Herbert Schalthoff officially retired as an employee of Hamburg 1. At the same time it was announced that he will probably continue his Schalthoff Live format as a freelancer from August 2019 .

Schalthoff is one of the best networked political journalists in Hamburg and an accomplished interviewer.

Private

Schalthoff has been married to a working teacher since 1992 and has two daughters. He lived in Hamburg-Blankenese for many years before moving to Alt-Osdorf in the Altona district in 2017 .
