Hermann Aichmair

Hermann Aichmair (born January 21, 1924 in Ansfelden ) is an Austrian university professor , author , painter , sculptor and collector of African art .

education

Aichmair attended the humanistic grammar school in Linz from 1934 to 1942 and studied medicine in Innsbruck and Vienna after the Second World War . He received his doctorate in 1951 in Vienna and was in 1983 at the University of Vienna ao professor of ophthalmology .

Author, painter and draftsman

His first poems and drawings were written during the Second World War. The first publication took place in 1989 with the title "Voices and vibrations" , where drawings and poems from the years 1943 to 1984 were included. The volume of poetry “Love life, because tears fly too quickly” , published in 1991, contained not only ink drawings but also oil paintings .

His art of painting was further developed from 1981 through annual courses in Salzburg with Karl Hittmann , in Vienna with Günther Bauer and in Deggendorf with Ellert.

sculptor

In 1992 he turned to carving , first using the chip carving technique , later also in the form of woodcuts and wooden figures. Under the guidance of Edith Dallner , he also made wooden structures that are suitable for bronze casting .

African art collector

Aichmair is the founder of the Academy for the Orthoptic Service and has traveled to several African countries as an ophthalmologist .

He holds a folk art collection, among others with numerous objects from Africa ( small sculptures , sculptures , tribal symbols, masks and fertility - fetishes of different materials like metal , wood and ivory ), which he in 2010 in District Museum Meidling presented to the public. A carved chest from Nigeria and paintings on goatskin are considered special showpieces . Gerti and Hermann Aichmaier presented the Landesmuseum Linz Nativity art from around the world. While cribs from Ethiopia to Cyprus were exhibited in 2006 , 150 more cribs were exhibited in 2007.

Memberships

The artist is a member of the Austrian Medical Art Association and has been with the Innviertel Artists' Guild since 2002 .
