Hermann Benningk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Benningk , also Harmen Benningk , (* before 1618, † after 1668 probably in Hamburg ) was a German piece and bell caster .

life and work

Benningk belongs to a family of foundries that was widespread in northern Germany (Hamburg, Lübeck , Danzig ) in the 16th and 17th centuries , and their exact relationships are not fully understood. Hermann Benningk is documented by his activity in Hamburg for the period from 1647 to 1668 and can possibly be differentiated into two foundries of the same name. His father Reinhard Benningk († 1617) had already taken over the workshop of his grandfather Matthias Benningk as a council founder in Lübeck. Hermann's son Albert Benningk was again council founder in Lübeck and is considered the most important representative of the family.

Guns

According to Thieme-Becker, Hermann Benningk has a cannon in the armory in Berlin and another, formerly in the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich , with the inscription: "Herman Benninck me fecit anno 1662" . This gun apparently originally came from the inventory of the city of Hamburg, as it bears the coat of arms of Hamburg, the coats of arms of six Hamburg council members and the inscription Temporibus dominorum Garlefi Langebeck et Johannis a Spreckelsen . Another gun, a "Recumbent mortar barrel, 25-pounder" with the inscription: HERMANN BENNINCK and ME FECIT ANNO 1645 is in the holdings of the German Historical Museum Foundation with inventory number: 04.67 .

The oldest of the Lübeck Novgorod drivers Johann von Gohren (before 1620 - before July 1672) had signed a contract in 1660 for the delivery of 300 guns to Tsar Alexei I of Russia. One hundred of these guns were cast by the Lübeck council founder Nikolaus Wiese . Further guns for this order were made by Hermann Benningk.

Fifth Benningks in Heiligenstedten

Bells

A bronze Fünte Benningks was made in 1638 for the St. Marien Church in Heiligenstedten . At a height of 99 cm, it has a diameter of 76 cm. The conical basin rests on a strong round articulated support around which the four evangelists stand; the whole rests on a round profiled plate. At the basin there are reliefs that show the baptism of Christ, the blessing of children, Christ on the cross (the blood flows into a chalice) and a Madonna with child in a halo.

Bells by Hermann Benningk can be found in the Trinity Church in Neuendorf b. Elmshorn (1639) and in the St. Magnus Church in Tating on Eiderstedt (1649). The bells in St. Andrew's Church in Kuddewörde (1668) and in St. John's Church in Seester (1668) were assigned by Beseler to his son and Hamburg successor Hermann Benningk the Younger (1640–1679).

There is no record of how the gun got into the holdings of the Royal Arsenal.
