Life and accomplishments

Hermann Bollnow was born in Stettin in 1906 as the son of the secondary school teacher Otto Bollnow , his brother was Otto Friedrich Bollnow . In 1914 the family moved to Anklam because his father became principal of the 3rd elementary school there. Hermann Bollnow attended the Humanist High School in Anklam. He then studied Germanic philology and history at the University of Greifswald . He spent one semester each at the Herder Institute in Riga and at the University of Göttingen . He was a student of the University of Greifswald in Adolf Hofmeister , where he was in 1928 with a thesis on The Count of Werl to Dr. phil. PhD.

Subsequently, from 1928 to 1930, he edited the cataloging of the Pomeranian castle walls under Otto Kunkel . On this topic he researched and published later; professionally, however, he initially took the career of high school teacher. To this end, he passed the scientific state examination in Greifswald in 1931 , and the educational state examination in Stettin in 1933 . In 1938 he became a teacher at the Luisenschule in his home town of Anklam. In 1943 he acquired the venia legendi for middle and modern history at the University of Greifswald with a thesis on investigations into the history of the Pomeranian castle in the 12th and 13th centuries . His university career was delayed by military service; he served in 1939/1940 and after 1943 as a soldier, most recently as a medical sergeant. He was then held as a prisoner of war until July 1945.

After the Second World War, when his homeland, Western Pomerania, belonged to the Soviet Zone and later to the GDR , Bollnow settled in Lower Saxony. He took on various positions in the university service below the full professorship and expanded his field of work from historical research to other areas of social sciences . At times he was a private lecturer at the University of Göttingen and at times lecturer in sociology at the Clausthal mining academy . From 1952 he worked at the University of Social Sciences in Wilhelmshaven . With the affiliation of this university to the University of Göttingen on April 1, 1962, Bollnow would have received a full professorship, but he died on March 31, 1962 in Wilhelmshaven.

Bollnow was a member of the Historical Commission for Pomerania .
