Gustav Hermann Kletke (born March 14, 1813 in Breslau ; † May 2, 1886 in Berlin ) was a German poet, writer and publicist.

Life

Hermann Kletke was the son of a lawyer from Breslau. Even as a high school student he wrote and worked occasionally for Wroclaw newspapers. He studied at the University of Breslau and became a doctor of philosophy doctorate . From 1832 he was a member of the Corps Borussia Breslau . He stayed temporarily in Vienna , where he belonged to Nikolaus Lenau's circle of friends . Driven out of the Austrian censorship , he went to Berlin, where Eduard Hitzig introduced him to the Monday Club .

The music critic Ludwig Rellstab recommended Kletke to the Vossische Zeitung in 1838 . Kletke was initially the editor of this probably most important sheet of the Berlin bourgeoisie , and in 1849, together with Otto Lindner, designed the main political section. From 1867 to 1880 Kletke was editor-in-chief of the newspaper. He then handed over the management to Friedrich Stephany , but remained a nominal member of the editorial team until one day before his death on May 2, 1886. In his last working years, Kletke devoted himself primarily to the Sunday supplement.

As a writer for young people, Kletke ensured above all that older materials from German and classical poetry were made accessible to young readers in prose versions. With his fairy tales by the fireplace , he provided a counterpart to Richard Volkmann-Leander's most successful fairy tale collection at the time , the dreams of French chimneys (1871). Kletke's collection of the Märchensaal der Völker (1844/1845), which, like his adaptation of the Rübezahl sagas (1882), records peculiarities of Kletke's Silesian homeland is part of the Herder tradition . A multilingual mixture of cultures was Kletke's ideal.

As an editor , Kletke excelled above all with Geistliche Blumenlese from German poets (1839), Book of Travel (1852) and the collection of pictures of nature and morals (1861).

As a liberal thinker and opinion-forming publicist, Kletke was a much sought-after conversationalist and correspondent. His long-term contact with Theodor Fontane is important due to the edition of their correspondence (1969) as a contemporary document.
