Career

Hermann Stech, son of the lawyer Wilhelm Stech († 1927), spent his youth in the southeast Mecklenburg residence town of Neustrelitz , witnessed the collapse of the monarchy here, attended the Carolinum grammar school , where he passed his Abitur in 1925. He also studied law and was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD . After subsequent assessor work at regional and local courts, he switched to Mecklenburgische in Neubrandenburg in 1934 . First as counsel lawyer working for the company, he moved on in 1938 to the Board. After the beginning of the Second World War , his activity was interrupted for several years because he was drafted for military service and then became a prisoner of war . After his return, he returned to the board of directors of the insurance company, which had now moved to Hanover, and became chairman of the board. After the successful rebuilding of business activities, a life insurance and legal expenses insurance subsidiary was founded during his tenure in 1971 , and he took over the chairmanship of the supervisory boards of both companies. At the end of 1977 he moved from chairing the board of directors to the head of the supervisory board at the parent company, and later he became honorary chairman of the supervisory board.

From 1946 Stech became involved in the newly founded Association of Property Insurers , of which he was a member of the specialist committee for hail insurance for almost three decades and which he chaired for the first five years of its existence. Until 1974 he was also a member of the International Association of Hail Insurers , of which he was also temporarily president. From 1966 he sat on the presidium of the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV), from 1969 also at the Association of Property Insurers. In accordance with the articles of association, he was alternately deputy chairman and chairman in the following years. At the GDV, too, he was elected deputy to President Ernst Meyer in 1970 and, when he suddenly died in spring 1972, became his successor. In the autumn of that year he was confirmed in office at the general meeting, but in 1973 he decided not to run again due to age and was inherited by Otto Vossen .

In 1972 Stech was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
