Otto Vossen

Otto Vossen (born February 12, 1906 in Dortmund ; † February 27, 1998 ) was a German engineer and insurance manager. From 1963 to 1973 he was CEO of Colonia Versicherung AG and until November 1975 President of the Association of the German Insurance Industry . At Colonia, he played a key role in the company's growth and laid the foundation for the current position of the German Axa subgroup.

Career

Otto Vossen studied engineering and was a graduate engineer. active. In 1931 he started his first job in the insurance sector when he started working for what was then Gladbacher Feuerversicherung in his home town of Dortmund. After the Second World War , in which he was promoted to the rank of officer , he returned to the insurance industry as a deputy board member at Colonia Versicherung AG in Cologne . In 1951 he was appointed a full member of the board of directors, and in 1963 he took over as chairman of the board. Under his leadership, the company became one of the most important insurance companies in Germany, in particular through a series of mergers with other well-known insurance companies. In 1969, when it took over National, based in Lübeck, the company grew to become number two behind Allianz-Versicherung . In 1970, the Colonia-National-Gruppe had a share of around six percent in the German insurance market. In the following year, Gladbacher Feuerversicherung and the associated companies of the insurance group were taken over, so that within two years the number of employees in the group rose from 1669 to 5286. At the same time, Vossen strengthened the Colonia brand, in which the central companies of the resulting large group operated under this name from 1971/72: For example, Union Krankenversicherung became Colonia Krankenversicherung , Concordia Lebensversicherung into Colonia Lebensversicherung and the Dortmund Deutsche Union Bausparkasse into Colonia Bausparkasse renamed. On July 31, 1973 he resigned from office and from the board of the parent company.

In addition to his work for Colonia, Vossen was also an association official in the insurance industry. In the 1960s he was temporarily chairman of the Association of Property Insurers. In 1973 he took over the office of Chairman of the General Association of the German Insurance Industry from Hermann Stech , which he handed over to Arno Paul Bäumer two years later . In the 1950s he also held a teaching position for insurance and taxation as well as loss prevention and damage control technology at the Technical University of Aachen .

In 1972 Vossen was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

In 1967, Cardinal Grand Master Eugène Cardinal Tisserant made Vossen Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and invested in Münster on April 29, 1967 by Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . Vossen had been a member of the Catholic student union KDStV Burgundia Munich since 1926.
