Hermann Uhde (born July 20, 1914 in Bremen , † October 10, 1965 in Copenhagen ) was a German opera singer ( bass baritone ).
Life
Uhde completed his vocal training with the baritone Philipp Kraus in Bremen. Karl Scheidemantel was one of his other teachers . He made his stage debut in 1936 at the Bremen City Theater . Further engagements as a bass singer took him to Freiburg im Breisgau from 1938 to 1940 , then to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich from 1940 to 1942 and to the German Opera in The Hague from 1942 to 1944 . There he also began to sing baritone parts.
From 1947 to 1948 he appeared at the State Theater in Hanover , from 1948 to 1950 at the Hamburg State Opera , from 1950 to 1951 at the Vienna State Opera , from 1951 to 1956 again at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and from 1956 to 1957 at the Stuttgart State Opera . In 1957 he became a member of the Vienna State Opera, and in 1961 also a member of the newly opened Deutsche Oper Berlin .
From 1949 he appeared at the Salzburg Festival and from 1951 at the Bayreuth Festival , from 1951 to 1953 as Klingsor in Parsifal , 1953/1954 as Telramund in Lohengrin , 1951 to 1957 as Gunther , 1952 as Melot in Tristan , 1953 as Donner and 1952 and 1960 as Wotan / Wanderer in the Ring of the Nibelung and 1955/56 as a Dutchman in the Flying Dutchman .
In 1959 further guest appearances at the Grand Opéra in Paris , at the Opera of Rome and at many other major theaters around the world followed. He sang at the Metropolitan Opera from 1955 to 1961 and 1964 . He also made guest appearances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London from 1954 to 1960 .
Uhde died of a heart attack on the stage of the Royal Copenhagen Opera during a guest performance by the Kiel Opera in a performance of Faust III by the Danish composer Niels Viggo Bentzon . He was buried in the Peretshofen cemetery (Dietramszell) .
Thanks to his “metallic sharp” voice and his clear diction, he shone particularly well as a Wagner interpreter, such as Klingsor, Wotan, Gunther, Telramund and the Flying Dutchman. But he was also a successful interpreter of Beethoven , Gounod , Strauss and Verdi .
