There he also began to sing baritone parts.

In 1957 he became a member of the Vienna State Opera, and in 1961 also a member of the newly opened Deutsche Oper Berlin .

In 1959 further guest appearances at the Grand Opéra in Paris , at the Opera of Rome and at many other major theaters around the world followed. He sang at the Metropolitan Opera from 1955 to 1961 and 1964 . He also made guest appearances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London from 1954 to 1960 .

Uhde died of a heart attack on the stage of the Royal Copenhagen Opera during a guest performance by the Kiel Opera in a performance of Faust III by the Danish composer Niels Viggo Bentzon . He was buried in the Peretshofen cemetery (Dietramszell) .

Thanks to his “metallic sharp” voice and his clear diction, he shone particularly well as a Wagner interpreter, such as Klingsor, Wotan, Gunther, Telramund and the Flying Dutchman. But he was also a successful interpreter of Beethoven , Gounod , Strauss and Verdi .
