The Rabenstein office was an imperial fiefdom, which was founded in 1336 as the Rabenstein rule by the Lords of Waldenburg . In 1375, the Chemnitz Benedictine monastery bought the rule from the Lords of Waldenburg, who in exchange received the Großhartmannsdorf manor in the Middle Ore Mountains belonging to the Chemnitz monastery . This came as an exclave to the Waldenburg rule of Wolkenstein .

When the Chemnitz monastery bought the Rabenstein rulership, the Rabenstein feud broke out in 1386 . Since the division of Leipzig in 1485, the Rabenstein rule belonged to the Albertine line of the Wettins . After the introduction of the Reformation and the resulting secularization , the Chemnitz Office was formed from the territory of the Chemnitz Monastery in 1548 . The Rabenstein rule has since been part of this new office.

Since 1602 the village of Niederrabenstein was loaned to the von Carlowitz family . Then a manor of the von Carlowitz family was built in Niederrabenstein. In 1619, a descendant of the family also acquired Rabenstein Castle with Rabensteiner Gasse (Oberrabenstein), creating a new Rabenstein rule, which was divided up from 1671. In 1686 the Niederrabenstein estate was sold. The von Carlowitz family owned the castle and manor Oberrabenstein until 1774. After that, both went into civil ownership.
